5 Great Amos Lee Songs
Amos Lee is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist whose musical style spans folk, rock and soul. He has released four albums on Blue Note Records. Lee’s “folky, bluesy sound” has been compared to Bill Withers, John Prine and Norah Jones. A New York Times music critic described her as having “honeyed vocals—light amber, slightly sweet, a hint of grain” that she describes as “angular, without much fuss or over-effort” in “1970s folk rock and rustic soul.” . music song craft.
I really like the musician’s style and every time I hear it, I can hear that his sound is changing a bit and his songwriting is constantly evolving. As a singer songwriter, every time I hear your music it just gets better and better. Lee is an artist that inspires me to push myself as a songwriter and continue to strive hard to make great music. His songwriting is awesome and he’s really improving and I can’t wait to hear more. I’ve compiled a list of 5 great Amos Lee songs and what they mean, or the best I can decipher. Sometimes the interpretation may be different than what the songwriter intended, but it always happens.
1. Street Corner Preacher – Last Days in the Lodge album
A great story-telling song about a man trying to overcome his past problems and sins and make it into today’s world (at least that’s what I think this song is about). It’s funny, but the song could be completely different. The best version I’ve heard of this song is from the “Live from Bonnaroo 2011” video. Lee is accompanied by a bunch of artists and backing singers. The song never sounded better.
“He received new mercy, new grace
Street corner preacher with an angry face
He got two years off for good behavior
Back in the neighborhood, working for the Redeemer”
2. In the arms of a woman – Amos Lee (self-titled) Album
A wonderful love song. This is it. That’s all I have to say. When you hear this song, it makes you feel romantic, loved and good. When I read the lyrics, it sometimes reminds me that this isn’t a romantic song at all, because it has this line: “Although I spend most of my days alone these days.” Does this mean he’s not with her anymore or is he always away from home because he’s on tour? Not sure, but the song is an instant classic.
“I’m calm
In the arms of a woman
Although now I spend most of my days alone
A thousand miles from where I was born
When you wake me up
He’ll take me home”
3. Colors – Amos Lee (own title) Album
This duet with Norah Jones shows off her vocal range as a singer when she hits those falsetto notes. A song about how different the world is when your love is not around. Things don’t seem to be the same and time just flies.
“When you left
All colors fade
When you left
Not the years they march
When you left
Colors fade”
4. Rolled Down Windows – Mission Bell Album
An upbeat song that makes you want to get in the car and drive until you run out of gas. This is a great song for a road trip or a beautiful drive.
“The windows are rolled down
The moon hangs low
The windows are rolled down
Guess it’s time for me to go, hey-yy-yy…-yy”
5. Keep It Loose, Keep It Tight – Amos Lee (self-titled) Album
It’s one of those songs I’ve talked about that is so open to interpretation. I think this song has to do with him dealing with his growing fame and learning to deal with fame and still being humble about life. “Keep It Loose” means don’t get too stuffy about fame and money and have fun in the process, “Keep It Tight” means don’t get too loose and learn to be disciplined to keep in your life. and continue to work hard to maintain a career in music. Also, keep it loose and tight, not just in music, but in life and love (referring to verse 2).
“and sometimes we forget what we got
who are we,
and who we are not
I think we have the potential to fix it
keep it loose
hold tight
hold tight”
As an aside, I had to pick 5 BIG songs for these songs. This is not a top 5 Amos Lee song. I think there are so many great songs that could all be top songs. I didn’t want to force myself to choose, so I stood up and said 5 great songs. I’m looking forward to more Amos Lee music because he’s an inspiration as a songwriter and he seems like a really cool guy too.
