50 Cents and His Rolls Royce Phantom
Real name: Curtis James Jackson
Date of birth: July 6, 1975
50 Cent (also known as Fifty or Fiddy in African-American colloquialisms, born Curtis Jackson on July 6, 1976 in Queens, New York) is a popular African-American hip-hop artist. Once virtually unknown outside of his hometown of Queens, southern Jamaica, Eminem is currently signed to Shady Records and Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Entertainment. The rapper, who was first signed to Shady Records, was scouted before he met Eminem. Eminem first met 50 Cent with MTV News reporter Sway Calloway; Apparently, Eminem hadn’t heard any of 50 Cent’s performances before seeing him in person. He appeared on the 8 Mile soundtrack with an accompanying song and video (“Wanksta”), which immediately received major airplay on BET, MTV and radio stations across the country. According to many observers, his continued success is guaranteed by his large underground fan base and street cred, which he has earned by appearing on nearly every major New York mixtape in recent years.
Curtis Jackson never knew his crack-cocaine-addicted father, and his mother, a bisexual Queens drug dealer who worked under “Fat Cat,” was murdered when Jackson was just eight years old. Her death had a major impact on Jackson, the extent of which is speculated by fans, and her sexuality also played a key role in Jackson’s emotional growth, which he later references in The Game’s song Hate It or Love It. album, The Documentary), “Come up, I was confused, my mom kisses a girl/ Confusion happens, it comes up in a cold world”. In the same song, there is also a slight indictment of his father’s absence: “Dad’s not around, he’s probably committed crimes”.
After his mother’s death, Jackson ended up living with his grandparents, where he became involved in the local drug trade as a teenager. Hanging around the Queens neighborhood of his native Jamaica, Jackson went by the name “Boo Boo.” During this period of drug distribution, Jackson met fellow Queens native Tony Yayo, who later became a member of Jackson’s G-Unit group. In June 1994, Jackson was arrested on drug charges. Because Jackson was a second-time offender, he was able to avoid a substantial prison sentence and accepted seven months in a “shock prison” boot camp. Later, he could brag about this period as “from seven to nine”.
In 1997, he became the father of a son, Marquise. Jackson met Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC fame and signed to his JMJ label. Jay taught him the basics and then 50 left the label to find someone to help him achieve his dream of rap stardom. He teamed up with hip-hop production duo Track Masters, who recognized 50 Cent’s talent for sharp lyrics and signed him to Columbia Records in 1999. Although he looks back on that time with distaste (his bio indicates that the studio was “closed”), his 18 days in upstate New York produced 36 tracks that would later become his breakthrough album, Power of the Dollar. “How to Rob,” a humorous ode to robbing a bunch of industry rappers (Jay-Z, Puff Daddy, Busta Rhymes (Flipmode Squad), various members of the Wu-Tang Clan, even the Track Masters, and more) is an instant hit on to New York radio.Power Of The Dollar was never released due to its 2000 shoot, and Columbia Records executives decided to drop it, claiming the shoot was a negative publicity stunt.
In the world of hip-hop, cars take center stage, and there’s no star bigger than 50 Cent right now. But “Fifty” isn’t satisfied with what’s in his garage and plans to literally turn the world of cars upside down. 50 Cent is about to top up his Rolls-Royce Phantom before the company even does the work…
“I only want something that no one else has”, declares the megastar behind the scenes at the one-off British concert held at the Rockingham Racecourse. He then unleashes the ups and downs of how and why he will slaughter his Phantom. “I don’t care if it messes up the electrical system. The roof will be gone. I want something sportier. I’m not old. That’s why I want to cut the roof off it. I’m going with the TVs. There were TVs in the package I got. It’s totally loaded. I’ll leave everything in there. I’ll just cut the roof off. Make it a “vertible”.
Funkmaster Flex, New York car artist to rap stars, is the man you’ll be turning to for that perfect chop-top at 50. The Bronx customizer, 50 Cent’s motorcycle mentor and restorer of the singer’s ’65 Chevy Impala and ’84 Buick Regal, tried to talk the megastar out of what some consider sacrilege.
“I don’t think it’s such a good idea and it’s going to cost almost as much as the car,” predicts the host of the cult TV show “Ride With Funkmaster Flex.” Rather than take the roof off the Phantom, Flex sees fit to try and buy a production example of the stunning 100EX convertible concept car when it goes on sale in 2007. According to idea 50, none of them are included.
“They won’t give me one,” he snaps with the air of a petulant teenager. “It’s great to drive a Rolls-Royce [promoting the company]but they haven’t met the child yet.”
50 (I was warned not to call him Mr. Cent!) flexes his considerable muscles. Less than three years since joining Eminem at the top of the hip-hop charts, 50 is enjoying the power of fame and a $100 million fortune that would power many small countries.
Fame and fortune come at a price. In 2000, Curtis James Jackson III was shot and killed outside his grandmother’s house in New York. He now has more bullet wounds than fingers on one of his disfigured, diamond-encrusted hands. One of the 9mm shells even went through his front teeth. Every time he smiles, I try to notice. So far I have failed.
