A Day in the Life of a Website Copywriter

I cannot speak for the copywriters of other websites; I can only speak for myself. And it really depends on the day, because the ride is like sitting in the front seat of a super-mega-thriller upside-down roller coaster.

My day as a website copywriter starts at 5:10, when my alarm clock automatically plays upbeat gospel music to signal that it’s time to get started. I don’t think I need to get up that early, but my brain is most productive in the morning, so the earlier I start, the more good hours I have. The snooze function is my best friend and if I press the button a few times it gives me a false sense of security and I think I’m going to get another second of quality sleep.

I go to the gym first thing most days to do 30 minutes of weight training and 30 minutes of cardio and twice a week for a strength/resistance workout at 6am. After all, a copywriter for a website needs to stay fit because it’s not about sitting like a calf on a chair all day. There are errands, client meetings and meal breaks.

Okay, this is the exciting part. I stretch out my arms and hands to relax before slamming down on the keyboard. This involves squeezing a tennis ball ten times with both hands. I check all my emails and respond to all immediate needs and requests. Then comes work on client projects. It’s now 8am because I’ve made and cleaned up my breakfast, which is usually a spinach/mushroom egg white omelette with crispy red potato cubes on the side.

I put on my website copywriting hat today as I work on website content for a local accountant. You need some slogans, one of my favorite things, and some fresh, updated content for your soon-to-be redesigned website. Fortunately, this client understands the value a good website copywriter can provide. I will send you a mission for free. It’s always a good idea to add a value-added element.

This website copywriter doesn’t struggle with writer’s block because I only work on specific projects for a limited time. I work in blocks of hours and then move on to another project for an hour. If I have to return to the previous project, I will do so after a short break. Stretching and meal breaks between projects are essential to maintaining good momentum. In between client projects, I will work on my blog or my monthly newsletter.

During my mental and physical downtime, I usually take a break, make personal calls between 14:00 and 15:30, and have lunch during that time. Your body clock can vary greatly, so you should plan your business based on your own body rhythm and the most productive working hours.

Most days I make time for some kind of marketing activity. I write correspondence or do email marketing. I take a few minutes every day and work with my social media groups, especially Linkedin. It’s a powerful media tool and, if used correctly, can lead to more sales and increased bottom line.

As a website copywriter, I divide my day into four parts:

  • Client work
  • My own marketing tools (blog, newsletter)
  • Marketing to prospective customers
  • Social media

Not every day will include all four segments, but it’s a good strategy to follow. Set up your days and weeks based on how you want your business to be. If you want to take every Friday off, you’ll need to turn on client projects to meet deadlines. According to Michael Gerber’s book, The E-Myth Revisited, putting systems in place puts you running your business, not your business.

Stephen Covey says it best when he says in his book The 7 Milestone Habits; begin with the end in mind. Start by describing exactly what you want in your business and in your life. Keep this list in mind and let it motivate you to live and spend your days to the fullest for you and your family.

So, put on your website copywriting hat and get to work!
