Awakening: Moonfell Wood Game Review
Princess Sofia’s journey to find her people continues in Awakening: Moonfell Wood. Awakened from a centuries-long slumber in a dreamless castle, Sophia managed to escape from the castle grounds and is now looking for help to find her fellow human beings. Guide him through Moonfell Wood and help him seek an audience with the Fairy Queen. Use your skills to help Sophia find her family and friends and take her rightful place as ruler of the kingdom!
Awakening: Moonfell Wood continues the adventures of Princess Sofia as told in the first game in the series, Awakening: The Dreamless Castle. He fell into a magical century-long sleep and woke up to find his land deserted and no fellow humans. He has since escaped the castle grounds and is now on his way to Moonfell Wood to seek an audience with the Fairy Queen. Hopefully the fairies will find a way to find out what happened to his people.
This game is a hidden object puzzle adventure game like its predecessor and features the same beautiful fantasy atmosphere and scenery. You can travel to an enchanted forest in different day and night versions and meet interesting characters such as fairies, centaurs, pet dragons and more. Most of them will help you in your quest to find the Fairy Queen and the answers she holds, but there is also an evil witch and her minions lurking.
The gameplay is in a standard puzzle-adventure style, with a main interface where you can see your immediate surroundings as well as the items you pick up along the way. You explore the world by moving from scene to scene, each of which has multiple areas that you can interact with. A unique aspect of Moonfell Wood is that these scenes have both daytime and nighttime versions, with different interactive objects in each version. For example, a dark compartment would only be visible during the day, while an object under the hive could only be accessed while the bees are sleeping at night. By finding and activating a magic portal, you can switch between day and night in the forest.
Areas of interest in each scene are either objects you can interact with or trigger hidden object scenes, puzzles, or mini-games. Interactive objects usually require an item in the inventory, such as a stick to poke an unreachable mushroom. or giving nuts to a squirrel (yes, it’s a fantasy game). Hidden object scenes come in two flavors. There is the traditional jumble of items from which you must find the list of objects you need. There is also an interesting hidden object game where you are given a beautifully painted tarot card and you have to find all the occurrences of a certain object on it. An example is if you find all 9 birds on the Forest card. This reminds me of the old visual puzzles where you have to guess how many faces are in a picture.
The puzzles also fit the theme of the game very well. There are jigsaw-style puzzles where you have to piece together pieces of old parchment or broken vases. There are also plenty of logic and pattern matching puzzles. These puzzles are not too difficult and can be solved fairly easily if you pay attention to the various clues. The puzzles are not mind-blowing challenges, but serve as a nice interlude to keep the gameplay from becoming too monotonous.
The graphics of the game are beautiful and its picturesque atmosphere fits very well with the fantasy theme. The eerie night scenes with the purple and white glow of the crystals are especially beautiful. The music is also suitable for the game, charming, but also soothing. However, the game does require some ‘adventuring’, so be prepared to move back and forth between scenes as you solve puzzles and unlock new items.
With many recent hidden object games featuring creepy houses haunted by supernatural forces, a fantasy adventure game like this with beautiful forests and magical fairy folk is a very welcome change. You’ll love Awakening: Moonfell Wood if you enjoyed other fantasy adventure games like the original Awakening: The Dreamless Castle or similar games like the Enlightenus series.
