Book Review of "Everything You Wanted to Know About Indians But Were Afraid to Ask"

The author, Anton Treuer, told how this book came about. When he was younger, he heard about a lady who ran a sweatshop and went to check it out. When he arrived, there were a bunch of naked people. An old naked woman hugged him and said she was sorry for the way her people had treated her people throughout history. He didn’t have the heart to laugh or turn away. He politely asked her to put on some clothes and sat down with him to answer all his questions. This began his journey to help non-Aboriginal people understand Aboriginal people.

The first part of the book covers the heart-wrenching history that the natives experienced from Columbus to the boarding schools of the 1900s. These are the stories not always told in education history books.

The middle part of the books answers common questions about culture and government practice. He has nine children. Only three of them are registered. Her family went to a Christmas party where Santa was giving out presents and was told that only the three registered children were eligible for presents. The word “Santa Claus” should not be used in this way.

At the end of the book, there are personal experiences that he went through in his life. In the first grade, Anton had long hair. Her teacher brought her to the front of the class and dressed her up as a girl, with makeup and a barrel, while she and everyone else laughed. It was humiliating for him. I guess he didn’t ask if he wanted to do it first. Teachers need to understand that their words and actions can help or hurt a child’s self-esteem.

I have a grandson who is mixed race. I hope when she gets older she won’t experience any kind of mistreatment. I don’t live near him, so I won’t be able to protect him from malicious words. I hope you will be raised to love all people and appreciate the goodness in individuals.

I hope that education will begin to embrace the positive contributions that people of all races have made and the progress that has been made over the past 50 years. Our country had a flawed beginning, but we can change the future into a story we want our children to hear. Honest conversation and understanding is a good start.

The author also has a young reader’s edition that I would like to read. It wasn’t in my library, but I plan to find it.
