Building a High Performance Instrument on a Tight Budget

So you’re a musician, keyboardist, organist, but your budget doesn’t cover the cost of an instrument you’ve fallen in love with at your local music dealer.

There is an alternative! With the birth of MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) about 25 years ago, the electronic music industry underwent a dramatic change, which meant that MIDI-equipped instruments could communicate with other MIDI equipment, sound modules (sound modules were like synthesizers in in a box). ) and even computers.

In the 1980s, computers such as the Atari STE came standard with MIDI. This made it a highly sought after piece of hardware. Many of the world’s major studios had a devastating effect on Atari. Many top ten hits were thanks to Atari. Music producers Paul Hard Castle, Eurythmics, Tears for Fears, Mega, Stock Atkin and Waterman probably used Atari and Cubase/Notator to produce countless hits.

Midi is still used today, which is a great interface. I’m not the richest person in the world myself, so I have to do what I want on a tight budget.

It would cost around £3,000 to get a machine that I would be comfortable with on a solo gig. What can I do to work around this? This is how I did it:

Looking at a big auction website, I bid and won a Yamaha Electone EL40, circa 1992 (ish) It doesn’t sound bad, the piano sound is one of its best features, it still holds its own for its age. The rest of the machine is above acceptable. Now I have an instrument that I can practice on and even take small bookings without any inconvenience. But in order to implement a larger function, I needed something a little more impressive.

Luckily I already have a computer that I used for graphics and internet, not a bad spec for what I need. After looking around I finally found what I needed, a good midi sound card, AN EMU and luckily it had audio outputs and inputs too which is great because my Electone has audio in and out too so no need for external amplification to whatever I hear. .

Software: The choice was extremely simple as I only want to play one instrument live and not the backing tracks, but at the same time I wanted the quality of the background music. The software I bought was made by Steinberg, the same people who make Cubase VST (virtual studio technology), a high-end recording software. It’s called V-Stack, and as you can see, the first 3 letters of the name are VST! With VST comes VSTi, the “i” stands for instruments. VST-i is a plug-in used within Cubase, there are many different VST-i’s on the market and on the Internet, from virtual synthesizers to emulators that are near-exact copies of their real-world counterparts, and everything in between, including Also virtual. guitarists, bassists, drummers, etc. But Cubase is not a “live” application, rather it is designed for recording. This is where V-Stacks come in, allowing the user to adapt their VSTs in a ‘live’ situation.

There was still one hurdle I had to overcome, which was how to change a note using the mouse while playing the instrument (on the bass) with both hands and feet. Since I already have a touchscreen monitor, it’s out of my price range again. Back to the big online auction site. I was simply browsing the computer and monitor pages when I came across a perfect solution, a ‘touch screen kit’ priced at just under £50. It came in a variety of sizes, one of which fit my existing monitor perfectly. I didn’t wait any longer and bought it. The package arrived a week later. I immediately opened it, took my monitor apart and put it back up, my heart sank when I couldn’t put the monitor back together. So now I was without a monitor. The other day I was out in the local town center when I had a brilliant idea, not sure if it would work but worth a shot. Double-sided adhesive tape. It was the best thing I ever did with 99p! At home I attached the kit to my monitor with the double sided tape and luckily I put the touch screen glass in the right place because once it was stuck it didn’t budge. All that remains is to connect the wires and upload the drivers to the computer.

After a year and a half, the screen still works great, I’ve added a lot of VSTs in that year and a half, and it’s incredible to play in combination with the Electone PC. I made some videos and uploaded them to YouTube. Comments included: “I have an EL90 (which was the top of the range Electon) and it couldn’t achieve the sounds I was producing”.

All in all the Electone, touch screen kit, software cost about £750 and now plays 3-4 times as many instruments.
