Children Learning Music – Advice For Parents

*Parents are the key to success – Parents are undoubtedly the greatest teachers. As any teacher knows, without parents, even our best efforts have very little impact. Because we understand this very well, we have created this page to help you as a parent understand what your children need to do in order to eventually succeed on the guitar.

*Exercise as a Habit – When you give your children (especially young children) the choice to exercise or not, they usually choose not to. In most cases, real practice is tiring and boring work, but it is necessary. Think of learning music like learning to read. The early stages require concentration and are not particularly enjoyable. If young children were given a choice, they would probably watch TV and never learn to read. But they would regret it later in life. In fact, most parents work hard with their children to teach them to read and write. Music is no different. If you are serious about your child learning music, we strongly encourage you to get involved. The first year is when they need you the most. Children do not have the wisdom of adults, and when left to choose what, when and how to practice, they mostly give up. Overtime, kids make practice a habit. Almost every time a child learns to play the guitar, there is a very supportive parent behind the scenes.

* So what do they need? – Junior students mostly work from two sources;

*As a parent, what do I need to know about G4GUITARMETHOD? – There is a checklist at the front of their folder. (open their folder and this should be the first page you see). This checklist contains all the requirements for the current level. As the student progresses, boxes will be checked to indicate that they have successfully completed a particular skill or song. The focus of their practice should basically be where the square is marked. The teacher occasionally writes comments in the section below. Parents should check this every week. If all the boxes are checked, they will receive a certificate and advance to the next level.

* So how can I help with their practice? – Take some time each week to see what they are learning. Ask your child what exactly he is working on. The best time to ask is right after class. If you ask them regularly, they will often pay more attention in class, knowing that the questions are coming. Try to understand yourself. Better yet, learn to play the guitar yourself. We also hold classes for adults, so feel free to sign up.

* Performance – Set specific dates for your child to perform their latest play for family or friends. Once in a cycle (4 times a year) would be good. There is so much to work on. Make sure you reward them in some way.

* Incentives – It is important to understand the difference between inducement and extortion. Blackmail is forcing someone to do something that only benefits you. Encouragement is a positive way to encourage the individual in question to reach their potential. Using incentives with children will eventually help them discover that practice has its own rewards. Instead of taking your kids to a movie or buying them a PlayStation game, use them as incentives.

*Starting at a young age from 5-7 years old – The focus for young children is more on having fun to develop positive associations with the guitar. Learning the guitar requires the development of fine motor skills, auditory skills (listening) and comprehension. The fine motor skills of playing the guitar are slower to develop in a young child, but the work done at this age will pay off later. These skills are the same as learning to speak, read and write a language. It should be expected that their development will be roughly the same. If your child practices writing for 10 minutes a day, they may see gradual improvement overtime. Because children practice speaking much more than reading or writing, speaking develops more quickly. It’s simply a matter of practice. We wouldn’t expect a 5-year-old to write a novel, but we would expect him to communicate at a reasonable level. The early years are essentially the foundation and the formation of practical habits. Don’t expect too much, just encourage them and be aware of how much time they are spending on their practice.

* Listening – The music that children listen to plays a big role in learning. If you want your child to appreciate and ultimately become a passionate guitar player, you need to expose them to guitar music. Instead of 2 hours of TV or computer a day, give them 30 minutes for music appreciation. Look for music with obvious guitars like Eric Clapton, Santana, The Beatles, Green Day etc… Why not try classical, flamenco or jazz guitar. Most libraries have a good selection of CDs. Especially the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Try renting a concert DVD instead of a movie. Watch “The School of Rock” DVD. It’s a lighthearted, comedic look at school-aged elementary school kids learning music.

*Guitar fitness – Learning guitar is often confused with playing guitar. Many people decide to buy a guitar because they think it will be fun. They focus on playing the guitar. Learning guitar isn’t particularly fun. Playing guitar is fun. Playing the guitar is one of the best feelings anyone can experience. But learning guitar is HARD WORK. It’s like fitness. Getting fit is hard work. Being fit feels great. But as you get fitter, it gets easier. Young children need a lot of support and parental involvement. Try sitting with them when they practice and watch them. Pay close attention to what they are doing. Mandatory for children under 10.
