Don’t Censor the Music and Artistic Expression

“Don’t censor music and artistic expression.”

Eminem’s music, especially the songs “Kim” and “Stan”, continue the tradition of music and American art in general: the gothic killer ballad that has been with us since the blues or Appalachian folk music. “Stan” is like an Edgar Allan Poe story when you think about it. Johnny Cash shot a man just to watch him die. It has a very solid, long-standing role in culture.

Self-righteous moralists are up in arms over something that has always been part of the literature of development. When you are a child, you have to learn about violence, hate, death and fear. It’s part of growing up. And if you’re not fed by Eminem, you’re fed by your own nightmares. The illusion that children should be protected from this is related to a kind of fetishization of innocence, which is unrealistic.”

We live in a society where we are taught to hide our true feelings and emotions. Looking back on the way I was raised at school and at home, I now know how hypocritical it was. Teachers and parents tried to hide the reality. They depicted a safe world with nice people. Religion (especially the way it is taught) has added to this false impression.

Eminem’s work seems progressive to conservative people. But these same conservative people would have rejected Baudelaire or any other controversial poet or writer centuries earlier. Conservatism is usually a form of intolerance.

For most of my life, I felt insecure and didn’t know how to behave properly with people because I was too afraid to speak my mind.

There’s something I’ll probably never understand: why is it so taboo in people’s minds to refer to suicide? Goethe was also blamed by many for “Die Leiden des Jungen Werthers” (“The Sorrow of Young Werther”) because many young people committed suicide after reading his book. Goethe is not to blame, but the young people’s decision… but do we really need someone to blame? Anyone has the right to end their life if they feel their pain is unbearable. My cousin committed suicide when I was 15. I’m shocked, but I don’t judge you for it. It was his choice to end his immense grief.

MTV also censors concepts related to suicide.

The video for “Tatu” titled “Not Gonna Get Us” was considered shocking and censored not because it depicts two lesbian girls, but because they appear to commit suicide at the end of the video.
I was very surprised to discover that the word “die” was in the sentence
“I’m so sick and tired of being admired/
that I wish I were dead or fired » from Eminem’s song «The Way I Am». How is it possible ? How could MTV censor a word like “die” as if death is not part of our everyday reality?

They allow lines like “People kill, people die/Children hurt and you hear them cry” from sugary songs like “Where’s the love? » from the Black Eyed Peas and dare to censor in the video «The Way I Am» of «dying»?
How far do we push the hypocrisy?

Many writers and poets, such as François Villon in 15th century France, were considered shocking for their use of vulgar language. Many people want to pretend that vulgar and popular language doesn’t exist (I’m sure the same people use it in their private lives). Popular and vulgar words are also part of our culture, there is no reason to ignore them.

Why should we censor concepts like suicide, murder, and death in music when our kids are already playing violent games on their PlayStations and watching “Hannibal” and “Scary Movies” on TV? A little violence helps children to aggressively get rid of their own and should not necessarily be seen as dangerous and negative.

The best way to protect our children is not to hide the truth. The closer they are to reality, the better equipped they are to face real battles in life.
