Fundraiser Electrifies Palm Coast Audience

“Music and Moonlight,” the inaugural benefit concert organized by the Joy & Care-Giving Foundation Inc (JCGF) and the Flagler County Make It-Take It program was a smashing success. Even despite the long (almost two and a half hours) show, the audience was treated to music, dance and comics, which entertained them at the highest possible level.

Space does not allow for a detailed review of all presentations, but most of them stood out. The show opened with members of the Indian Trails Mustang Band (high school students) and the Matanzas High School Marching Band singing the National Anthem after an inspiring drum march to the stage. Mr. Tito Lagonera then sang the Philippine National Anthem. (JCGF builds schools for underprivileged children in the Philippines).

Mr. Lagonera’s voice danced in our ears. He was joined by members of the Filipino audience with beautiful and heartfelt voices.

The reunited band then gave us some rousing numbers that got the crowd rocking and joyfully participating. Little did we know that this great start to the show was just a small indication of what was to come.

After the Flagler Schools Steel Drum Ensemble entertained us with The Pink Panther and Funky Town, the audience was blown away by the musical skills of Justine and Derrick Tiu. Justine brought out the longest flute I’ve ever seen (which means it probably wasn’t a flute) while Derrick sat down at the piano. What followed next can’t be described as anything other than enchanting. Gyengéd played the Hungarian serenade of V. Joncieres with skill far beyond his years. This young lady played at a level that could not be lower than a professional. Keyboardist Derrick was elegant, soft and supportive, his rhythms perfectly complementary to the dancing notes of the flute.

The audience roared at the end of the play. I was personally struck by the beauty of what I heard. Then, to my surprise, Derrick stands up and takes out a violin as Justine sits down at the keyboard. Derrick goes on to greet us with Czardas from V. Monti. The piece begins soft and low and sizzles at times, his fingers once again flying across the strings with dexterity beyond his years. By the time Derrick finished, I was so stunned that I could do nothing but cheer my appreciation with the rest of the audience. After an enjoyable comic by The Seton Players, Sharon Resnikoff took the stage with her acoustic guitar for two songs. Both were his own compositions – She Rides the Wind and The Rainbow Song. While She Rides the Wind was clean enough writing and performance, The Rainbow Song stood out with intense lyrical and guitar work worthy of the highest level of professional music. Rainbow Song is a love song that radiates both intensity and beauty with beautiful guitar work. When this song comes out, you’ll want to get a copy.

Later in the program, Jameson Kuang almost stole the show. And if not, it’s only because of the high quality of the speakers mentioned above and a couple more I have to mention. At least he was the highlight of a night full of highlights. Jameson played Ballade 1 in G minor (Chopin). Played is too weak a description. He dreamed notes from his soul and massaged them into a piano keyboard, which in turn intoxicated our ears with sweet music at a virtuoso level. There is no way a live piano can evoke such grace and passion. As his hands moved the length of the keys, there was no thump, no thump, yet powerful, intense beats were produced by hand and heart that became one with the instrument. This audience was privileged to witness Jameson Kuang’s impassioned evocation of Chopin. In my opinion, Chopin himself would have been proud of this performance.

You could say it was all downhill from there, except that Tito Lagonera returned to the stage, this time with Emelda Dinopol (Tito & Em). They performed a lovely duet, weaving their talented voices around the song The Prayer. Their harmonies were top notch and their stage performances were professional. Then a young man, Sebastian Gutierrez, came on stage behind the piano and played the blues for us with his friends. I mean real live blues. With a very competent backing band (bass guitar, drums and lead guitar), Sebastian worked the keyboards with a good, old blues riff that had the audience hooked. The only shame of it all was that, due to the late hour, a significant portion of the audience missed this very strong performance.

There were other acts of varying talent. Belly dancing was interesting. How they do all this movement is unbelievable. The Seton Players returned for an even funnier set, but the finale featured the Seton Mixed Choir, backed by a more than competent brass section, rocking Palm Coast one last time with a fiery rendition of Go Ye Into All the World. Kermit Allison led the musicians and chorus through a ferocious, passion-filled crescendo that would have brought the house down in larger venues.

All in all, for a measly $25, this show goes far beyond its intent to help the Joy & Care-Giving Foundation raise funds to build schools in the Philippines. Directed and coordinated by Kermit and Janice Allison, the show went to a level that requires a larger audience, no. Next year, I’d be willing to bet there won’t be an empty seat in the amphitheater. I know for sure I will be there.
