Guide to Playing Piano by Ear

If you’re reading this article, you probably don’t instinctively play the piano. People born with this talent can play any song, but they probably couldn’t explain to you the process they use. They simply listen to a well-known song several times and slowly pick out the notes as they go. You too can learn to play without reading notes by following these simple steps.

Before you start playing the piano by ear, you need to learn some basic musical concepts. Once you understand how scales are formed and how chords and chord progressions are derived from scales, playing by ear will be much easier. This knowledge will also save you time because you will understand exactly why certain chords are played at certain points in songs.

Here are some definitions to help you better understand these musical elements:

Libra – A series of seven specific notes played one after the other. A song or “tune” consists of notes within a given scale.

Chords – They consist of 3 or more notes played simultaneously and are usually played with the left hand. Also known as “harmony”.

Chord progression – A series of chords played one after the other.

Rhythm – The arrangement (or pattern) of sounds and silences are emphasized on certain beats. (eg rock, waltz, etc.) If you’re like most people, you “feel” the beat.

There are three basic elements in music: melody, harmony and rhythm. These are also the 3 basic steps you will use to play the piano by ear.

1.- Melody. Notes within a song can either move up (higher pitch), down (lower pitch), or repeat (same pitch). So focus on each note of the melody and determine if it moves up, down, or repeats. Then you can start finding and hitting individual notes on the piano or keyboard.

Your first attempt to play the piano by ear might be “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” It starts going down in successive notes, then up, down, up, up and up again, skipping a note. It then gradually goes down, up, down, up, down and finally down. (EDCDEEE, DDD, EGG, EDCDEEE, DDEDC). Try a C, G, or F chord and see which one sounds better for different parts of the tune.

2. Harmony. Now try to harmonize the melody by finding the chords that match it. The three main chords of the AC scale are the C chord (CEG), the F chord (FAC) and the G chord (GBD). Melodies express chords. In this song, all but one of the first 7 notes are the same as the C chord. The next 3 (DDD) is part of the G chord, and the next 3 goes with the C chord.

The next 7 notes spell out the C chord again, the next 4 match the G chord except for one, and the last note goes with the C chord. Let your ear guide you and notice how one chord sounds better in relation to the melody than the others.

3 Rhythm. Look for rhythmic patterns in the melody and notice if and when they repeat. When you play the piano by ear, you will notice that the melodies are divided into phrases with similar patterns. For example: short, short, long / short, short, long. Or short, short, long, pause / short, short, long, pause, etc.

This song starts with 6 short notes, but the 7th note (E) is longer. In the following sentence you have two short and one long (D) note. The pattern repeats over the next seven notes, with the next four notes being short and the last being long.

Learning to play the piano by ear can be of great benefit to you, especially if you understand the basic structure of a song and have a simple and effective system. With enough practice, you can eventually develop your own style and maybe even create your own music.
