Guided Visualization & Subconscious Mind Power
Have you ever wondered if something really happened or just dreamed it did? If there’s one amazing thing you need to know about the power of your subconscious mind, it’s this: it can’t tell the difference between real experience and vividly imagined experience. This is the principle behind which visualization becomes such an incredibly effective tool in the process of transforming into your ideal self. When your subconscious accepts the new beliefs and attitudes, it begins to implement these changes in your life. These principles are used in most of the hundreds of audio programs I’ve created.
The power of visualization was made clear by a now famous study conducted at the University of Chicago a few years ago. A group of students, all of roughly equal basketball ability, were divided into three groups and asked to shoot shorts. Each team’s field goal percentage was recorded. The students were then given unusual instructions: The first group was told not to exercise or play basketball for 30 days. The second group was told to practice bad shots for an hour every day for 30 days. And the third group was told not to go to the basketball court at all for 30 days, but to mentally practice bad shots for about an hour every day. At the end of the 30 days, the students’ abilities were assessed. Not surprisingly, the first group, the group that didn’t practice at all, didn’t improve from their original scores. The second group, the hard-practicing group, improved their performance by 24 percent. But the most remarkable results were found in the third group. This group, who didn’t set foot on a basketball court and only imagined playing basketball, improved their performance by a phenomenal 23 percent—almost as much as the group that exercised daily.
THE POWER OF VISUALIZATION
Athletes were among the first to recognize that visualization could improve performance. A former world-class weightlifter has not trained seriously for more than eight years. At his peak, he could bench press 365 pounds. In recent years, however, he has only done occasional workouts, rarely lifting more than 280 pounds. He estimates it will take nine to 12 months of serious training to get back to the level he once reached and be able to lift 365 pounds again. One night, this American athlete worked with Soviet instructors who taught him how to use mental imagery techniques that involved very detailed and specific visualizations. After the mental training, the athlete was amazed to find that he could successfully live a weight that should have been impossible – 365 pounds – that he had not been able to lift for more than eight years. One hour of mental training enables him to do what would otherwise have required at least nine months of intense physical training!
In recent years, the use of visualization has become very popular among professional and Olympic athletes. Studies have shown that visualization can lead to actual physical changes in the nerves and muscles. By combining mental training with actual physical training, these elite athletes find the edge they’ve always been looking for. Spiritual changes affect not only physical changes, but also the most deeply rooted habits and beliefs. By visualizing the achievements you want to achieve, you influence your ideas and beliefs about your self-image and life. If you expand your ideas of what is possible, you will overcome what once seemed impossible. Through the power of visualization, the advantage of an elite athlete is also yours. HOW IT WORKS Visualizations are mental images, feelings and thoughts about a specific event. This is a different process than simply “seeing” something. Vision is a physical process that is directly connected to your conscious, physical world. Visualization or mental imagery, on the other hand, is similar to imagination. Your deep-rooted beliefs about yourself have created the image you have of yourself. Now, as you are guided through the relaxation/visualization sessions, consciously use your natural imagination to create what you really want, starting with your self-image. Albert Einstein once remarked, “Imagination is greater than knowledge.” Every achievement, every work of art, every valuable creation starts as an image in someone.
VISUALIZATION: YOUR MENTAL PLAN FOR SUCCESS
To create a building, the architect must first visualize the desired building type. This mental image is then projected onto a piece of paper: a blueprint. The builders realize every idea that is on the blueprint. Visualization works the same way. The mental image you have of yourself in your subconscious becomes a reality in your life. INCREASING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF VISUALIZATION Using visualization can be effective at any time; even during the daily routine, but it is most powerful when done in a relaxed state. This is because relaxation allows your mental images to reach your subconscious. First, you feel comfortable with your eyes closed, and then you let go of any negative beliefs or feelings about the subject. You then follow this with positive images and affirmations to reprogram your mind with positive, constructive beliefs and images of success.
EVERYONE VISUALIZES DIFFERENTLY
Different people’s minds work differently, so don’t worry if you don’t actually “see” a mental picture or image. Visualizations are sometimes very subtle. If you are a conceptual thinker, you may not see the details graphically. Instead, you can receive impressions, ideas, feelings or inner knowledge, or perceive information, hearing with your “inner” ear. If you’re a visual thinker, you can close your eyes and create vivid mental “movies”—detailed pictures, colors, and images. Or you can get a combination of both – both images and impressions. It’s best to avoid expectations about how your visualizations will look. Fixed expectations or worries about “doing it right” tend to block impressions. Relax. Be completely open and receptive to what enters your inner mind. Your own experiences will be uniquely wonderful.
During visualization sessions, you may experience many thoughts and/or images that seem to have nothing to do with your new self-image. However, these thoughts and images may be related to other areas of your life that are somehow related to your self-image. As they surface, they can evoke certain emotions, and you may want to capture such images during your trip to express your feelings. When you first start visualizing a new behavior or trait, you may find yourself arguing with some positive images—like, “I’ve never been more confident” or “Forget it, it’s just not me.” When this happens, it is simply your mind reacting to the old subconscious “programming” that has been at play for so many years. As you continue your visualization practice, this pattern will diminish and be replaced by the positive ideas you now place in your mind. If you repeat your sessions every day, the positive changes in your life will become greater and greater.
Repetition is what impresses the subconscious. Constantly flooding the subconscious mind with positive thoughts will eventually dispel and dissolve all negative thoughts. If possible, do at least one visualization every day. If you use this practice faithfully, you will be surprised how your ability to visualize in your own unique way develops.
