How To Make More Music Contacts

There is a lot of truth in the saying “it’s all about who you know”. Having connections within industries within your perspective can really make the difference between success and failure. However, most musicians I talk to about their relationships either don’t have enough or none at all.

Think of your musical connections like your fans. The more you have, the greater your options. Almost every musician I talk to who is aiming for a record deal has yet to reach out to a single label to let them know they exist. When I ask why, they usually say they don’t know anyone at the labels, and they’ve heard that most labels don’t, except for junk music. One thing to remember is that in general, almost everyone from publishers to managers hates spam. “No selling accepting unsolicited music” actually means that they don’t like it when someone sends them music without asking if it’s okay. It’s usually that simple.

In order for this to happen, you must first establish some kind of relationship with that person. In my experience, this is best done via email. For example, if we’re using record labels, a great plan would be to first make a list of all reputable labels that work with your style of music. Let’s say you find 100 tags. Create a spreadsheet using Google docs or excel and enter all relevant information for each label. Once you have this information, draft an email to send to all the publishers asking if you can submit your music for consideration. Be sure to personally address all emails with contact names.

Once you’ve sent all your emails, don’t expect to get many responses right away. You get a few, but in most cases it takes 2-3 follow-ups to actually respond. Those that respond should be updated in the table, highlighted above the rest. The colors coordinate the list, so that the labels that gave the attractive signal appear clearly separated from the others. Now, when it comes to following up on tags that have yet to be returned, the rule of thumb is to usually follow up about every two weeks. This may take some time, but you can usually create a lot of contacts using this method.
