How To Reach Your Music Marketing Goals Guaranteed!

Music marketing can be a slippery slope. You show up every day and get busy with hundreds of different tasks, and at the end of it all you sit back and feel all warm and fuzzy, safe in the knowledge that you’re moving towards your goal.

Most dedicated musicians know that you get what you pay for in your music career, and money is hard work!

In some cases, this can lead to “busy person syndrome”, where the sufferer works blindly, without a plan, and does not use time resources in the most efficient way.

It’s very easy to think that hard work is productive work, and without a clear goal, you can keep yourself busy for years without making any progress.

Before we go any further, I should say that for a significant part of my life I hated goals.

Let me explain…

Let’s say I set a goal to sell 100,000 albums this year…that’s all well and good, but honestly, I have absolutely no control over whether or not I reach that goal.

Now I know this sounds a little sketchy, but before you hit the big red x and kill this post for good, I’m thinking that if I wanted to sell that many albums, I’d have to convince 100,000 people to shell out their money. and press the “Buy Now” button.

No matter how many great bonuses or free t-shirts I give out, it’s still up to these people to make the decision, which means I’m not in control. It’s like building your music career goals on sand.

This is why goals have always felt like a waste of time to me because I could set the biggest goal and have the biggest ambitions and at the end of the day I was completely powerless over my future.

But then I saw the light…

I realized that if I thought about goals a little differently, I could take back the reins of my musical horse and ride all the way to success. Cheesy, right?

Imagine it like this…..

A goal – Something great that you want to achieve, but over which you have no control.

Commitment – Something you do every day that you think is most likely to help you achieve that goal. But the great thing about engagement is that you have complete control over the process.

For example, let’s say you want to add 500 people to your mailing list.

So if we were to use YouTube to achieve this, we would expect 1% of the people who watch our videos to click through to our website, and maybe 10% of those people would join the list.

Now we have something to go on, we would need 500,000 views on YouTube which would bring 5,000 visitors to our site and 500 subscribers to our mailing list. (A lot, but you have to work on it.)

are you still with me

So if you use YouTube’s search method, you can expect to get 10,000 hits per video overtime, which would mean you’d post 50 videos over the course of the year, or about 20 videos per month for three months. This means that if you commit to posting 2 videos a day, you can reach your goal within 3 months and then wait for the appropriate views to arrive.

After that, you can calculate and see how your plan worked out.

I hope you see that when you commit to something, you have complete control over whether or not it happens.

Now this does not mean that you can relax, because now you have to force yourself to fulfill the obligations every day. That’s the price you have to pay for success in the music business.

How to set goals from now on…

1. You need to sit down with a piece of paper and write down all of your career goals.

2. Go through the list and put a star next to each one that you think will have the most impact right now.

3. Pick ONE goal that you are truly committed to and that makes you want to get up early in the morning and work on it before you go to work.

4. Now make a big list of commitments you can make to achieve your goal. For example, if you want to play 5 gigs a week, you might want to call 20 venue managers a day.

5. Choose the engagement that is most likely to get you closer to your goal.

6. Now choose a period of time when you will practice the commitment. I think two to three months is enough time to see if it works.

7. The next step is to work flawlessly on your plan every working day. (Choose one day each week to rest and do nothing.)

8. At the end of the commitment period, sit back and see how you did. Did you reach your goal or fall behind? See what worked and do more of it and tweak things that didn’t.

As I said earlier, it should be someone who gets up early every morning and can work late into the night.

To be honest! Do any of these sound familiar?

– You don’t really want to play five concerts a week, but you have to quit your job and tell your boss that you’re fu@% off.

– You don’t really want a record deal if you want to be famous. (That’s okay!)

– You don’t want to be a millionaire, but you want the status and feeling of success that comes with knowing that you “made it” and the freedom to go your own way in life.

Look deep within and find the huge purpose you need to achieve your goal and put it at the very top of your plan. Keep working until you find something that’s as cool as you are break a metal wall to reach it.

A real goal can increase your chances of success by 90%.

Final thoughts.

Stop beating yourself up about not reaching your goals and start making commitments that have the best chance of moving you in the direction you want to go.

Many people get stuck because the mountain seems so hard to climb, but if you never take the first steps, you’ll be the one who has to stay at base camp and make sausages while everyone else gets all the sex, drugs and rock & roll.

There’s plenty of sex, drugs and rock and roll around. COME AND SHARE!

Good luck,

– Chris
