Ideas For Sharing Stories With Children – Part Two

In the first part, we looked at five suggested versions of the concept of a bedtime story, as well as some additional ways that parents and others alike can share precious moments and create precious memories with their children. Let’s continue with suggestion 6.

6. Let your children develop their own version of the events that might happen after the printed story ends. What will happen to the characters next? What further adventures can they have? What happened to the characters before the story began? How different would the story be if it took place in a different place or time period? Let’s say your child was one of the characters in the book. Which one would he choose?

7. Expand every creative outlet that can help your children maximize their intellectual and imaginative powers. For example, follow up a story with a larger art project at a later date. Build a diorama of the story location or reconstruct the story location using everyday objects in your home. The sofa is a ship lost at sea, the decorative carpet is a magic carpet, the kitchen table is a stall loaded with exotic goods in an open-air market.

8. Encourage children to make up their own stories or favorite fairy tales. This can be done verbally and recorded on a computer or tape recorder for posterity. Older children can write out their own stories and create fully illustrated books or websites. Moreover, copies can be made to distribute among family or friends. Some children can work together to create a group story, with each child taking turns contributing to the next element of the story. Alternatively, each child could contribute one element to a collective work of short stories, poems or jokes.

9. Use puppets to tell an old story or a new one. Puppets give remarkable impetus to storytelling, and they fascinate young and old alike. They bring stories to life and encourage children to turn story lines into dialogue, giving an exciting new twist to developing children’s verbal skills. Children can dress up the puppets or dolls they already own, or even design their own puppets, costumes and sets. Take it a step further every now and then, write a script and perform it for the neighborhood kids.

10. Try a simple, age-old, no-fuss technique called “Draw and Tell” stories. In these short stories, he draws the elements of a simple story as he tells it. For example, the story might refer to two cookies and a letter, among other things. By the time the story is over, children will be delighted to discover that these drawn parts have created a single unified drawing that represents the subject of the story. Suddenly, these two cookies function as a girl’s two eyes, and this letter appears as her mouth, and the ensemble of unrelated objects now looks like a single simple drawing of a girl. These easy-to-use drawing and storytelling kits are readily available from a variety of sources and require no special preparation or materials, just a piece of paper and a marker.

11. After reading a book, help your children create their favorite characters out of paper, cardboard, scraps of fabric, scraps of felt, or other materials. Paper plates and cardboard tubes from used toilet paper rolls are two of my favorite craft materials. Kids can add extra details with leftover yarn, cotton balls, dry macaroni, spangles, and the like. These characters can then be proudly displayed in your child’s room as a monument to your child’s creativity and a fun reminder of all the great books they’ve read. Such figures can also be used to act out stories.

12. Keep a costume box full of quirky items like old clothes, scarves, other accessories and jewellery. Add it regularly and draw from it when your children want to dress up and act out a new story. Make character masks too, using some paper plates or paper bags or poster board. Add some relevant props to this treasure trove, be it a reel or sword, wands or baskets. Regardless of whether they are homemade or store-bought, the financial investment is negligible. This growing prop box can be used for everything from impromptu reenactments of new stories to amateur stage productions at home or school. Add tambourines, toy drums and the like and you can introduce an element of music to such creative gameplay.

I hope this collection of time-honored story development ideas will inspire you to rethink techniques you’ve used in the past and expand your repertoire to include other activities that may be new to you. Children can gain a lot from reading, hearing and telling stories. Stories help children develop language skills such as vocabulary, listening comprehension, reading and writing. They also help children develop their critical thinking skills, reasoning skills, and imagination. Some of the ideas listed above can also encourage children to appreciate art, learn to observe the visual environment more closely, and reach their own artistic and other creative potential. Let your children’s imagination run wild, and the reward may surprise you and your children.

There’s nothing quite like a cozy bedtime read, just you and your child sharing a story while spending a few precious minutes together at the end of a busy day. No other activities or fancy props are required, but experimenting with some of the suggested techniques every now and then will keep the experience fresh and full of surprises. This, in turn, will forever captivate your children with the magic of stories and storytelling.
