If Opportunity Doesn’t Knock, Build A Door

The title used for this article was originally attributed to Milton Berle. It’s as accurate today as it was when he first said it.

In 2012, a young man named Kelvin Doe became the youngest person in the program’s history to be invited to MIT’s “Visitor Internship Forum.” He was 15 years old. See what 8 million people found incredible about this young lad in this inspiring YouTube video.

Kelvin grew up in Sierra Leone and his family was impoverished. He became a self-taught engineer. In the midst of poverty, he was able to build his own community radio station, where he broadcasts news and music. He created a way for his rural community to receive light. He built a generator because he needed one – from whatever resources he could find around his home or in the trash. When he finally appeared in the United States, after word of his genius spread, he impressed the engineers and inventors at MIT.

Kelvin built a door.

So how do you find an opportunity and open the door when nothing comes your way?

One thing I’ve found is that you have to be prepared to take the initiative and maybe even break the ground. I am an entrepreneur, founder of a non-profit organization, a social enterprise and several businesses. I firmly believe that if I’ve been waiting for something to come my way in my life, I’ve probably been waiting a long time.

“To build a door” by definition means to build something. If you want to start something new, you have to be ready to create.

Do you always have to be the leader?

I do not think so. If you want to create an opportunity to develop a new social enterprise, non-profit organization or business, then you can be the person with the idea. By sharing this concept with others who are comfortable in leadership roles, you can work together as a team.

Opportunities and the ideas that create them can be found almost anywhere. Historically, there are people who take an existing product or service and improve upon it. A simple tweak or subtle change here or there can make something more successful. You can find these types of opportunities simply by looking at what others are overlooking. Success can often be achieved by being a little more observant and creative.

Other times, there are individuals who can create something and solve a problem in a way they haven’t done before. Take Elon Musk, chief product designer, inventor and entrepreneur at Tesla Motors. It’s all over the news these days, and for good reason.

Elon Musk is a great example of someone who sees opportunity everywhere. In a nutshell, since he started NASA’s mothballed space shuttle program, he’s been working with other global leaders to privatize what was once a government-only process to get people into space. He co-founded PayPal, which revolutionized the way people send and receive money in a much more cost-effective and seamless online transaction.

Recently, Elon Musk has been in the news for two reasons: 1) He stated that self-driving cars are a “solved” problem. In his remarks last month, he said that engineers and designers essentially knew how to make a car drive itself, and it would only be a matter of time before it was perfected and systematically introduced; and 2) sent out a single tweet on March 30th that on April 30th he was going to show off a new invention that wasn’t a car.

That single tweet created a huge buzz online, and remarkably, as noted in this article, Tesla Motors stock jumped $900 million, or nearly 4 percent, in the 10 minutes after the tweet.

At this point, we don’t know what Elon Musk will present, but this is a possibility. Like Kevin, Elon Musk is a great example of someone who thinks outside the box and sees opportunities in many areas. Any inventor could have been limited by circumstances or ‘reality’, but this was not the path they chose.

They create solutions. They create opportunity.

There may not be immediate returns, but one message you need to take in is that both Kevin Doe and Elon Musk are building doors where they may not have existed before.

We all have the capacity and ability to do so. It’s not special for a favored few. We just have to believe in ourselves and then do the work.
