Is the PS4 Really the Best Gaming Console? We Review, You Choose

If Sony was trying to make a statement with the release of its PlayStation 4 console, it did a good job. Contrary to most of the rhetoric and overblown pre-game talk, the PS4 seems to have lived up to its claims and is the most powerful console on the market. It has undergone yet another exterior overhaul, and some major design changes to the Dual Shock controller. It also expanded the memory and significantly increased the performance of the processors. These upgrades are clearly visible and the PS4 offers stunning HD graphics that run smoothly and lightning fast.

With some nicely stocked exclusive games, streaming access and multiplayer options, PlayStation fans are likely to welcome the latest arrivals with open arms. Not to mention, this console costs about $100 less than its arch rival, the Xbox One. The PS4 still holds its own today.

Performance: 5.0 / 5.0

The PS4’s single-chip processor combines an eight-core x86-64 AMD “Jaguar” CPU and a 1.84 teraflop GPU. It is backed by 8GB of GDDR5 RAM and has a 500GB mechanical hard drive. Sony boasts that its new hardware enables 10 times better performance than the last PS3. That’s quite an impressive feat.

Another nice touch is the fact that the PS4 comes with a 500GB drive. This extra space helps when you download movies and games from the PlayStation Market. If you ever feel like you’re running out of space, don’t worry, the hard drive can be upgraded by DIYers without voiding your warranty.

PS4 HD graphics are stunning and the responsiveness of consoles is currently unmatched. What’s even more impressive is the fact that this machine is capable of such high levels of performance without looking like a runway jet or overheating. Not to mention that the entire power supply is inside the unit; as opposed to the Xbox One, which is still connected to the external power cable to save space inside the console.

Features: 5.0 / 5.0

The PS4 comes with the same semi-matte black and semi-gloss finish as the Xbox One. However, its appearance is completely different. That’s because the PS4 has a slim and clean design that doesn’t look like an oversized VCR from the mid-80s. I’m not saying the Xbox One is the ugly step-sibling of the bunch, but I probably wouldn’t be asked to prom if the PS3 was available and willing. Now, to all of you who were offended by such a superficial statement, I know that Mom always said, “It’s what’s on the inside that counts.” And in that regard, I can assure you that the PS4 would still be the first to be asked to the dance.

The PS4 has had some changes to its components, so none of your older PlayStation peripherals will work – go figure.

Although the PS4 doesn’t have retrograde capabilities to play PS3 games, many of the games you previously owned can be purchased at a significant discount from their online store. The only trick is that you have to insert the older PS3 disc into the console while playing the online version.

Games purchased from the PlayStation Store are downloaded directly to the hard drive, and there is no need to worry about the disc being lost or scratched. The only negative is the fact that downloaded games cannot be borrowed for the weekend or exchanged for credit at the local game store. As this form of buying games becomes more popular, stores like GameStop and other toy retailers could take a big hit — either by taking a spot next to Blockbuster in “Reminiscence Park.”

The new PS4 Dual Shock 4 has undergone physical changes that make it stand out a bit from its predecessors. Some notable changes are to the analog sticks; which are placed slightly further apart to avoid collisions with the thumb. They are also designed with recessed uppers and are rubber coated for better grip. The Dual Shock 4 comes with both an external speaker and a headphone jack for the headphones, but be aware that it can only come out of the controller connection in stereo – a nice touch nonetheless. I’d say one of the nicest design features of the Dual Shock 4 is the metal touchpad on the front of the controller. It works like a laptop touchpad and is extremely smooth and responsive.

Although Dual Shock 4 can be purchased and used on PS3, older Dual Shock 3 controllers are not compatible with PS4.

Those who already own a PS Vita can stream games from PS4 to the handheld over Wi-Fi. This creates a second screen, similar to the Wii U, and allows you to play games while someone else is using the TV. While this is a nice feature, it probably wouldn’t justify buying a PS Vita on its own.

The PlayStation Camera is a nice touch, but it takes very little interaction to realize it’s nowhere near as robust as the Xbox Kinect, and doesn’t seem to have enough game interaction to make it worthwhile. It also has voice command functionality, although it’s very limited and you might want to spend the money on another controller instead.

Multimedia: 4.4 / 5.0

The PS4 seems to have taken a backseat to its previous plans to be an all-in-one media center. While it still boasts one of the best performing Blu-Ray and DVD players on the market, unlike the PS3 it can no longer easily stream music files, CDs and content from your computer. Instead, it looks more like a Roku. However, if you just want to use the console for gaming or occasional access to Netflix and other movie apps, you’re good to go. Not to mention that movies are easily accessible and load lightning fast. You can even use PS4 to connect to social networks and share game highlights – nothing more than introductions.

When it comes to music, both Xbox and PS4 have their own channels. PlayStation offers “Music Unlimited”, for a small fee of course. It works like Pandora and allows users to listen to entire albums. The only weakness is that it is a bit slower and less sophisticated in recognizing the true genre of the music or artist you want. Along with this feature comes “Video Unlimited”. Another movie-based channel that’s surprisingly deep in its selection of titles and allows streaming to alternative devices.

The PlayStation online gaming community has made great improvements in terms of interface and game features. The only downside is that similar to Xbox, PS4 users will now have to pay to access the multiplayer area. While this is a change from the PS3 where it was free, the experience is vastly improved and probably worth the price.

One handy feature of the PS4 is the iOS and Android app, which allows users to connect to the PlayStation Store and purchase and download games away from home. With this app, you can automatically download games to your console while you’re away from home and have them ready to play when you arrive. Overall, the PS4 still has good interaction and variety in the multimedia department, but lacks the depth found on the PS3. Sony has taken note of some of these complaints and I believe they will make changes in updates.

Bottom line: 4.9 / 5.0

The PS4 is $100 cheaper than the Xbox One, but even if you removed the Kinect component to lower the price of the Xbox, the PS4 is much better value for the dollar. Its performance is undeniable, and while the Xbox One is a well-built unit, as long as Microsoft doesn’t address some performance issues, it won’t rub shoulders with Sony.

On the downside, the PS4 only has two front-facing USB ports. We felt that this design flaw, which also occurs on the PS3, would have been fixed, but apparently not. It also lacks the depth of titles like the Xbox One, and always has. However, it’s well within range and has plenty of exclusive, blockbuster titles and a promising future.

PS4 is a powerful gaming console that gives gamers exactly what they are looking for; seamless HD gaming experience with full functionality and control. Based on its undeniable performance, improved design and price point, Consumer High Five Reviews finds that a first-round draft pick is a no-brainer.
