Jean-Paul Sartre’s Absolute Freedom – Our Past Doesn’t Determine Our Future

Jean-Paul Sartre is perhaps the most important philosopher of the 20th century, who lived as a wealthy philosopher, playwright and social activist. He is the 20th century existentialist who coined the word and created his school of thought from various historical sources, including Nietzsche and Kierkegaard. Today, existentialism and Sartre’s philosophy permeate the way we see the world and the way we understand each other.

It was his masterpiece Being and Nothingness, a monumental philosophical work. Its essence can be summarized in one statement. You are what you are not and you are not what you are. A paradoxical statement indeed. So, what does it mean?

Throughout the ages, human beings have always wondered about the relationship between their freedom and their firm resolve. Every teenager wonders what the limits of their freedom are. What is the relationship between his being and his past with freedom and the future?

If you believe that your past determines your future and that you can’t do anything about it, you are classified as a fatalist. You have no hope of changing your life.
If you think you can achieve anything, you will be branded a hopeless, naïve dreamer.

Sartre claimed that every person has absolute freedom to choose his life. In any situation, you always have a choice as to how you act. Even if the choice is between coercion or death. It does not claim that every person has the omnipotent power to do anything they want or achieve anything they desire. Rather, Sartre argued that human beings are always in tension between their factuality and their freedom. A fact is defined as a fact of a person’s life that can never be changed, such as where one is born, one’s parents, or one’s genes. The fact is what constitutes our situation, it is the starting point from which we live our lives in freedom.

The fact or the past yes no but it determines our future. Practice shapes the opportunities that may come before us. But the future is never set in stone. Even on pain of death, we can resist and assert our freedom. Imagine the final scene of Braveheart, where William Wallace shouts, “FREEDOM!” while being tortured to death.

Each person plays an essential role in determining the meaning of their actions and situations. No person is inherently good or bad. No situation is completely right or wrong. Man is the source of values.

However, this is not solipsism or relativism. Not at all. Sartre was an absolute moralist in that he believed that absolute morals exist, for example killing without reason is wrong. All people intuitively understand and accept these morals. I would argue that as human beings we all have enough in common that these morals are naturally built into our genes and minds. We all understand the human right to life, food and work.

When evil happens, it is because people label another person as non-human or sub-human. They strip another person of their humanity and label them as an animal or an object instead.

Ultimately, taking responsibility for freedom means being the author of your own life at every moment. This means that I understand that I alone am the judge of what this action or event means to me. It means accepting that I can always choose what I do, even if I can’t choose the options presented to me.

Does this sound familiar? I would say that we all think this way today, but in times of adversity we often forget.
