Jerod Sarlo: Infinite Possibilities With 88 Keys

Jerod Sarló’s Music can best be described as multi-dimensional, seamlessly interweaving genres as different as classical and jazz. In addition to impressing the audience as an extraordinary pianist, Sarlo is a talented teacher, an excellent producer and, to my surprise, a path-finding beatmaker. An invaluable instructor, Sarlo is able to unleash the inner creativity of students using refreshingly innovative pedagogical techniques.

Sarlo started playing the piano at the age of 4 and taught his first students at the age of 14. Thanks to his prodigious gift, Sarlo attended the Denver School of the Arts Middle and High School Magnet programs and continued his piano studies on scholarship at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music and the New School Jazz and Contemporary Music Program. York City. On the East Coast, Sarlo had the opportunity to study with such legendary jazz masters as Andy Milne, Joanne Brakeen, Danilo Perez, Reggie Workman and Andrew Cyrille. The combination of innate talent and fervent study has led to Sarlo’s long list of recent accolades, including being recognized as an “Outstanding Soloist” by Downbeat Magazine.

Although Sarlo initially entered the music world through classical music, the genre still captivates him, and his appreciation for improvisation fueled his passion for jazz. According to Sarlo “Improvisation has always been a big part of my playing and I like to make sure I have a part in every song and it’s different every time I play. It’s always been about letting the music speak for me, and I must have the technical ability to make it possible.” In addition to jazz, Sarlo has performed almost every style of music, from Afro-Cuban to reggae, salsa to blues, funk to hip-hop, and musical theater to avant-garde.

As Sarlo forges his own melodic path, he’ll be the first to acknowledge his influences. These include Oscar Peterson, whom none other than Duke Ellington called “the maharajah of the keyboard,” and Art Tatum, who was recognized for his technical prowess despite near-blindness. In addition, Sarlo admires Herbie Hancock and Bill Evans for their innovative interpretations of the jazz repertoire and their imaginative compositional and chord-building techniques. Finally, the legendary pioneer of “Free Jazz”, Cecil Taylor, known for his polyrhythmic improvisations and energetic approach, is another of Sarlo’s idols.

This newcomer to our community has already made a huge contribution to Louisville’s soundscape. Last November, attendees of the Louisville Arts District’s first Rhythm and Hues event will recall the finale, when a moving performance of Sarlo’s original composition, Improvisation on Wind and Water, inspired the collaborating visual artists. Sarlo also encouraged his students to play different styles and explore composition. According to his words “I hope to bring a new approach and balance to learning piano lessons in a fun and creative way.” Exemplifying Sarlo’s playful approach, one of his writing exercises involves his aspiring composers using the musical letters of their names (A through G, as the musical alphabet stops) as keynotes for a new song. Such teaching methods serve to develop a personalized repertoire for young pianists, as well as the occasional giggle.

In addition to contributing to the Louisville art scene, Sarlo also performs at popular Denver venues BigWheel Electrosoul and Lamp! under the name Qknox. This January, Qknox released a self-titled album that features a breathtaking mix of Sarlo’s virtuoso instrumental playback, hip-hop beats and operatic vocal samples. Critics applaud; one aptly describes Sarlo’s album as “stunningly creative”. My favorite track, “All the Gray and Rainy Days” conjures up a comforting mirage of showers falling from the sky, interspersed with delicate beats, unexpected timbres and magical breaks.

Sarlo’s artist philosophy is simple but powerful; “I’m a big fan of letting people do what they want. In performance, that means thinking of the music as the sounds around us, not just the sounds on the page.” Driven by this progressive approach, Sarlo’s goal is to nurture the musical tastes of downtown Louisville.
