Learn How To Play The Guitar – 10 Tips to Get You Started

Learning to play the guitar can be quite a challenge. For many people, this mountain is too steep to climb.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. If you know where to start, the road to success can be a comfortable ride.

This article will show you how to get started and give you some tips on how to learn the basics without too much trouble.

It all comes down to:

One thing at a time. If you’re a beginner, you don’t want to watch Al Di Meola, then pick up your guitar and try to play like him. You have to start from scratch.

When it comes to learning the basics of guitar playing, I personally don’t include things like music theory, vocal learning, and so on. If you want to play, play! There will be enough time for boring things later.

That being said, here are some helpful tips for learning to play the guitar. (In no particular order)

1) Some things to buy:

– A guitar. A guitar can be useful if you want to learn to play.

But don’t buy the cheapest.

– Guitar tuner. The electronic tuner is very easy to use, you can tune your guitar in less than a minute, and it’s also not expensive.

– Buy a capo. The one I use (joyo jt12bclip) isn’t the cheapest, but there are plenty of them for less money.

-Plectrum (Pick). Buy a bunch of them. Just like cigarette lighters, they have a habit of disappearing.

I think you could find a lot more “good buys”, but let’s stick to the basics, shall we?

2) Get a chord chart. You can find them everywhere on the internet. Or buy a chord book.

3) Chords:

Start with “open” chords. They are easier to play and barre chords are a bit more difficult to learn. For a long time F was the only chord I didn’t use the open chord for. Useful chords to start with: C, A, Am, D, Dm, G, E, Em and F.

Once you know these chords, practice switching between them. For example, many songs use the sequence G, Em, C, and D (over and over again) (Try it! Play those chords and sing, “Always look on the bright side of life…”)

4) Songs to play:

When you’re learning to play a song, it’s really helpful to go with artists and tracks you like. There are 2 reasons for this. First of all, it’s more fun to play songs you love and you’ll automatically put more effort into your work. Second, once you know how to play the song, there is no “learning curve” to this part.

5) Play often.

No, playing an hour a week is not enough. I’d say 30 minutes a day is the bare minimum if you ever want to improve your gaming skills. And this at least 5 days a week. It would be a shame to be stuck with Parkinson’s until all the chords are finally in order. So practice often!

6) Slowly.

Don’t rush it! When trying to learn a new riff or song, don’t try to play it too fast. Slow it down until your fingers don’t know what they’re doing. Then you can increase the speed.

7) Posture.

Do not laugh. It’s more important than you think. You might think Slash looks good with his guitar hanging from his knees – or lower. But it’s not the perfect posture if you’re not already familiar with it. It’s no fun having back, shoulder and wrist pain just because you’re sitting in the wrong position.

Do a Google search for “guitar posture”. You will get more results than you ever wanted :o)

8) calluses.

Your fingertips will do. And they will hurt at first. And their bite will hurt even more. So leave them alone. Your fingertips, hardened over time, will be perfect for playing the guitar.

9) Strings.

Maybe you have a hard time getting excited on an acoustic guitar. They are mostly equipped with 0.12 gauge, but if you change them to 0.10 strings, you will notice the difference.

10) Have fun!

Don’t forget why you’re playing your guitar for a heartbeat. Have you already forgotten? Sit there and curse your wayward fingers in frustration?

Put that wooden instrument aside for a while and pick it up again tomorrow.

But why stop here? If you want to become a truly acclaimed guitarist and wow your audience, there is an easy way to achieve it.

Run over to Pelle’s Guitar Stuff and find out for yourself! And from there? Well, the sky is the limit!

Playing guitar is about having fun. You have to enjoy yourself – right? What’s the fun in it if it’s not fun?
