LSD March "Empty Rubious Red" aRCHIVE – Music Review

The noise is the voice of the Chaos Gods. All possible sounds are present in the noise, albeit kaleidoscopically, not in a hierarchy. The noise does not allow our expectations regarding the fulfillment of the order to be fulfilled. It overwhelms us and our plans, leaving us vulnerable, shocking us. But don’t let that fool you, noise is music. From the early recordings of DADA and Futurist artists such as Hugo Ball and Luigi Russolo to Musique Concrete, the sirens and crackles of Public Enemy’s “The Bomb Squad” and the current sonic onslaught of SunnO))), noise is music. Noise is also our world. Think about the soundscape you pass through every day. All the alarms and sirens and microwave beeps and computer clicks and doppler effects of cars and conversations and jackhammers and helicopters and horns and laughter and static and doors opening and closing and insects and birds and ocean waves and bed springs and all of it, all of it. We are adrift in a sea of noise.

Japan apparently went crazy for the noise. Since the late 1960s, the Japanese underground has produced some of the most terrifying, exaggerated and sublime sounds the world has ever known. Two early purveyors, Keiji Haino and Les Razilles Denudes, were simply devastating. Go a bit further towards Zeni Geva, Merzbow and Masonna and you’re entering some seriously schizo territory.

Current purveyors such as Acid Mother’s Temple and Ghost further expand the scope and impact of the timeless noise theater. Specifically, what about Japan? Could it be the only country ever nuked? It certainly seems to have contributed to the stream of nuclear monster movies made in Japan over the past 40 years. Mothra, Gammara, and of course Godzilla all seemed to be variations on the theme of nukes and accidents. the spirited and heightened drama of the Kabuki and Noh Theatres? this wildly colorful youth street culture? Full-body tattoos of the Japanese mafia? Is the religious response to nature so prevalent in Shinto? I think it’s not a specific thing. Probably just the accumulation of a rich and colorful heritage combined with some very creative souls.

Oddly enough, not all noise is particularly loud. In fact, some of the more interesting uses of noise can be found in smaller and quieter audio events.

There’s an entire record label called Lowercase that explores some of these quieter noise events. Other noises can be quite melancholic. Think ‘The Birthday Party’ band, or even some Tom Waits in ‘Swordfishtrombones’ or ‘Heart Attack and Vine’. Noise can be used subtly to convey sadness or strategically to highlight an explosive moment. This is the realm where we find LSD March and their latest reissue, “Empty Rubious Red” (ARCHIVE).

As mentioned above, this disc is a reissue of a previously (and microscopically available) independent release. It has some additional tracks and some great new artwork by Joe DeNardo of the band “Growing”.

Where some of the noise merchants mentioned above come out of the box swinging, LSD March tends to take a bit more time. The songs start with strange and soft jingles. They sound like springs snapping and balls rolling across the piano. The main man of LSD March, Shinsuke Michishita, is a master of restraint. But when things finally get loose, watch out! The music on this record is actually a nice range. There are quiet and melancholic moments. At times (“As Many A Stars In The Sky” and “Nude and Bizarre”) he drifts into scorched and desiccated folk music. The ethereal songs serve as a nice counterpoint to monstrously thunderous jams like “Empty Rubious Red.” LSD March is perhaps not as pure noise as, say, The Boredoms. They are more psychedelic, folk and drone based. Like many great Japanese bands, they are synthetic. You can listen to great music while playing from a high cliff in the vast ocean on a clear day. It represents the quieter and more extensive possibilities of the noise equation.

This album is sold out at ARCHIVE, but the full album is available for download at the Lotushouse Records mp3 store [http://www.lotushouserecords.com/shop].
