Movie Review – Three Average Movies That Have Some Memorable Moments for Moviegoers

Whale Rider – 2 stars (average)

“Whale Rider” is the story of an 11-year-old Maori girl who must overcome her grandfather’s prejudices and tribal traditions to fulfill her destiny and become the leader of her ancient aboriginal tribe on the North Island of New Zealand.

Only the eldest son will be the designated heir to pass on the timeless knowledge from one generation to the next, but “Pai” (Paikea, played by Keisha Castle-Hughes) is determined to do so against the odds.

Pai’s twin, who was supposed to be the next tribal leader, is born with their mother. His father is so distraught that he abandons the island and the traditions, entrusting Pai’s upbringing to his grandfather Koro (Rawiri Paratene) and grandmother (Vicky Houghton). His grandfather Koro’s belief system does not allow him to compromise on centuries-old traditions.

On the east coast of New Zealand, the Whangara people believe that their presence there dates back a thousand years or more to a single ancestor, Paikea, who escaped death when his canoe capsized while riding ashore on the back of a whale.

This is not just a movie, but a real tradition. Because Pai was doing traditional Maori things that women were not allowed to do, the cast and crew of the film performed special Maori chants to ward off any bad luck.

Whale Rider tests your composure, melts your heart and makes you want to scream. Child actress Keisha Castle-Hughes was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her incredible performance (Charlize Theron won for “Monster”). The Whale Rider received 29 other awards and 28 other nominations.

The whales in the film were depicted using a combination of footage of real whales, life-size models with humans creating motion, and computer assistance. Castle-Hughes said the key whale ride happened 15 to 20 miles offshore and was terrifying.

This movie should be rated good rather than average (the story is THAT good), but it suffers from terrible sound treatment that makes it hard to follow at times. I would watch this movie again, which is saying something when I rate a movie average.

Glory – 2 stars (average)

“Glory” depicts the bravery of the American Civil War’s first company of all-black volunteer soldiers as they fight against their own Union army and the prejudice of their enemy, the Confederacy.

The 54th Massachusetts is trained and led into battle by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick), a young idealist and abolitionist from a wealthy family. Gould, like the 54th, was hung out to dry by pretty much everyone involved. He is supported by Sergeant John Rawlins (Morgan Freeman), the highest-ranking African-American soldier, and Private Trip (Denzel Washington), an escaped slave.

Washington won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and a Golden Globe Award for his performance. Glory received Academy Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Sound, Oscar nominations for Best Art Direction and Film Editing, and Best Director (Edward Zwick), Best Score (James Horner) and Best Screenplay (Kevin Jarre). Golden Globe nomination.

The glory is long overdue. America is full of people who want to take credit for things they didn’t do; it’s nice to see recognition and appreciation given to americans who have done something honorable with courage.

Chris Rock: Bigger & Blacker – 2 stars (average)

This is a classic stand-up comedy show at the famous Apollo Theater in New York, created by the best American comedian of 1999, Chris Rock. Billed only as a comedian, Rock actually delivers social insight and relationship truths wrapped in the word “fk” in what seems like 1,000 repetitions of 65 minutes on stage.

Chris Rock delivers sharp opinion and the truth of his time in the cultural vulgarity that is the ghetto speak of metro African-American communities. If you cut through the language (ignore the delivery method), Chris Rock as a comedian and social observer is very impressive in 1999.
