Music Review of Fleet Foxes’ Self-Titled Debut Album

“Fleet Foxes” is a five piece indie band from Seattle. Their genres include indie folk, folk rock, baroque pop, indie rock and indie pop. Fleet Foxes consists of Robin Pecknold (vocals and guitar), Skye Skjelset (lead guitar), Jay Tillman (drums), Casey Wescott (keyboards and bass), and Christian Wargo (bass and keyboards). According to The Independent, Fleet Foxes described their music as “baroque harmonic pop jams”. Before the release of their self-titled album, Fleet Foxes released two EPs, “Fleet Foxes EP” in 2006 and “Sun Giant” in February 2008, both EPs received positive reviews and praise.

Fleet Foxes it somehow reminds me of the river Okkervil. I do not know why. The whole Fleet Foxes tour is like having fun and singing in a church. There are some that will make you sing in church, holding hands. And also those that make you nod. It is good to be in the church, harmony is created when Fleet Foxes are with you.

Fleet Foxes keep your heart at peace “The Sun Rises”. With some steady guitar and drumming. It doesn’t take long to fall in love with this song. From the lyrics where Robin went: “Morning red squirrel, evening red squirrel, morning red squirrel, I’m coming to take you home, the sun is rising over my head, morning, hold it, dear, into the night, sun, it’s going to rise, soon enough …” I don’t really know what it means, but one thing is certain. This song will make you feel good. Simple lyrics, but with a deep meaning.

“White Winter Anthem” really good i must say. It moved me from start to finish. It’s like when you eat an ice cream, you end up asking for more. That’s what happened to me when I listened to this song. I have to say that the White Winter Hymnal is really awesome! Robin made this song sound so simple, but so good! I feel the harmony of Fleet Foxes in this song. The vocals and music were too good to handle. Especially “woo hoo hoo woo hoo hoo”. Incredible!

“Ragged Tree” comes as the third track from the album. It’s the longest song on the album and one of the crunchiest on the album. A little again, reminiscent of the river Okkervil. As Robin sings, you can hear the rest of the Fleet Foxes joining in and having a good time. They provide beautiful and harmonious background vocals, which is one of the secret ingredients of every successful indie band and artist these days. With some amazing guitar strums at the end, this song is not to be missed.

Fleet Foxes continues “With a Tiger Mountain Peasant”, which is a beautiful ballad and featured Robin’s vocals. Robin sang, “Wanderers came this morning, where they went, Graceful in the morning light, to a fair of flags, To follow softly, in the cold mountain air.” I can’t tell what it means from the lyrics, but I can feel the sadness in this song. Fleet Foxes sure know how to take care of your emotions.

“Quiet Houses” it was accompanied by very good music. I was surprised the moment the music started, the sound of slamming a door accompanied by steady drum beats and a beautiful acoustic guitar. It’s so simple, but this song is so good. Check out the music! Oh yeah, I think Fleet Foxes is singing about ah… to me…” Happy and upbeat track with some really catchy hooks!

“Don’t Know Why” It started with the beautiful and harmonized moans of Fleet Foxes. This song has some highlights. When Robin finished singing a verse, he had to take a breath, build up his lungs, and sing a new verse again. It’s such a hard song to sing if you tried. Robin tried to make it as easy as possible. At the end where Robin said “There’s nothing I can do, there’s nothing I can say…” was the highlight of this song and was followed by 30 seconds of beautiful piano playing.

In “I heard them mixing”, Robin’s moans can be heard early on, and slowly joined by the rest of the Fleet Foxes, creating a beautiful platform for harmonized hums and moans. They said “woo hooo hoo…” And more! It’s like a choir group singing with Fleet Foxes. A beautiful one from Fleet Foxes. They were the music in Heard Them Stirring.

Wow, “Your Protector” it’s like some kind of heroic hymn for a warrior. Interesting track from Fleet Foxes. There were some flutes in this track, which brought a new instrument to Fleet Foxes’ music. 🙂 The chorus was kind of good and strong, I can feel it when Robin yells, “As you lay down to die next to me baby, I’m in the shooting game, would you wait for me, the other one? would you wait for me…” With your Protector I see that Robin he’s trying to tell a story, but maybe I don’t get it. But I can’t ask for more from the music and endlessly harmonized moans and hums.

“meadow lark” another beautiful acoustic ballad from the meadow palanquin. If I remember correctly, Robin is singing about his pet, a meadow lark. I just love the way Fleet Foxes hums this song. It was just too beautiful!

“Blue Ridge Mountains” it started very slowly, but still managed to finish on a high note. This track had a very unique instrument, it sounded like some kind of Chinese or Japanese instrument, which made Blue Ridge Mountains so good to the ears. A piano can also be heard in the background as Robin continued to sing. “In the trembling wood, where the trembling dog rests, Our good grandfather built a log nest, and the river froze, and the house snowed in, and the yellow moon shone bright, till the morning light” Brilliant stuff here.

The last track from Fleet Foxes’ debut is a beautiful acoustic number called “Oliver James”. At times when I listened to this song, I just wanted to sing. The fact that this song is so easy to sing makes it such an amazing track. Only Robin’s voice and some guitars are heard. Even without the guitar, I have no doubt that this will be a big track. He’s just adorable. A peaceful way to end the album.

Evaluation: Wow, every song on Fleet Foxes debut has its own uniqueness and specialness. I really enjoyed this album. The Fleet Foxes instrumentals were pure genius, I can’t help but listen to them constantly on my ipod. Fleet Foxes also tried to add some variety to their music by using different types of instruments, which I think did a really good job. There’s nothing to argue, there might be some mistakes in the album or some boring moments on Fleet Foxes, but Fleet Foxes is worth spending time with. 7.5 out of 10, I have to tell you. Cheers!

Outstanding numbers (My picks): White winter anthem, ragged wood, quiet houses, meadowlarks, Blue Ridge Mountains.
