Picking the Perfect Acoustic Guitar – Part 1

Before you put down the money for the guitar you want, you need to ask yourself some key questions. Questions like: Do I want a nylon string guitar or a steel string guitar? Should I buy a full solid wood acoustic guitar or just a solid top guitar with laminated back and sides? Would I like to have electronics built in so I can play through the amp? How do I want the guitar to sound and look and feel in my hands?

Before you buy, you should consider some important questions.

In this article, I’ll discuss the pros and cons of nylon string vs. steel string acoustics, as well as some different body shapes that affect sound and playability.

Perhaps the most popular acoustic guitar on the planet is the steel-string dreadnought style, manufactured by CF Martin & Company in 1916 for retailer Oliver Ditson Company. Martin began producing dreadnoughts under his own brand in 1931. We’ll simply refer to these as “D-size” guitars. But just because it’s the most popular style, does that mean it’s worth buying? For example, if you’re younger or smaller, it’s almost impossible to hug a dreadnought, let alone try to play it that way. There are smaller body acoustics that have a “narrower” waist and thinner depth that fit much better. The 12 series, known in the Taylor lineup as the “Grand Concert” size, is designed this way, while the 14 or “Grand Auditorium” size sits somewhere between the Grand Concert and the “D-size” guitar. Martin has a very similar design. The important thing here is to find out how well the guitar fits? You need to find what is comfortable to wear because you can play longer with less fatigue and it makes the game much more enjoyable.

In general, a larger body guitar produces more bass, while a smaller body produces cleaner and sharper highs. However, this is just a rule of thumb, there are many factors to consider when making a guitar sound, such as the tone used and the bracing system used on top. A “D-size” guitar is considered by most to have a perfect balance of both, with good bass tone and good clean highs. I personally like the size of the Taylor Grand Auditorium, but that’s just my opinion, to each their own. It’s worth taking the time and effort to play as many different styles and brands of guitars as possible before making a purchase. Don’t stick to brand names. I heard a friend say, “A Taylor guitar sounds better than a whole room full of Martins”. This is simply not true, just an opinion. He likes Taylor guitars. It’s like a Ford vs. Chevy vs. Dodge thing. It depends on what you like.

The next thing I want to talk about is nylon string and steel string. Nylon strings provide a “soft, smooth warmer” sound than steel string guitars. Although most people think that nylon string guitars are for classical style music and nothing else, this is simply not true. My favorite musician of all time, Willie Nelson, uses a Martin N20 classic style guitar, and I think it’s the best sounding guitar in the world. True, it has a Baldwin pickup that can only be played through a Baldwin amp and some special strings (designed before nylon), but it definitely doesn’t sound like a typical classical-style guitar. It has a very unique sound. I saw Carlos Santana play classical style guitar on stage and it had the most beautiful and soothing sound. You don’t get that pure beautiful sound from an electric guitar, period! The standard steel string guitar also sounds wonderful and is widely regarded as the most universally styled guitar in the world. You can play anything from Beethoven’s “Fur Elise” to hard rock, and the steel string acoustic sounds right at home.

One last thing to consider is the fact that nylon strings are easier on your fingers than steel strings. If you’re just starting out, I think you should seriously consider this. He won’t want to play if he’s in pain. After a while, calluses develop on the fingertips, and the steel threads will not bother you, but this does not happen overnight. If your fingers hurt every time you play a single note, you won’t have any fun and you won’t want to keep playing.

In closing, I want to make sure you try out as many guitars as possible before you buy one. They may all look similar, but they all play and feel differently. If you’ve found what you’re looking for, GET IT! PLAY! and KEEP IT! After a while it will be “broken in” and comfortable, and it will actually be easier to play.

In the next article, I’ll talk a little about guitar construction, down to using laminate or any solid tone wood, and how that can affect the tone of the guitar. I hope this was of some help to you. Good luck and keep choosing.
