Popular Guitar Chord Progressions

Did you know that many popular songs from the last century can be played simply using the same popular guitar chord progressions? So even if you’re just a beginner at playing guitar, you’ll be able to play a whole range of different songs by learning some easy-to-play guitar chord progressions.

So let’s look at one of the most common guitar chord progressions in pop and rock music. Most of these progressions rely heavily on the G, C, and D chords, so it would be beneficial to fully commit to learning these individual chords before starting to cover these popular guitar chords.

GCGD

The chord progression GCGD is not genre specific. In fact, there are so many songs that you can play on your guitar using a variation of popular guitar chord progressions. Both the 1959 “Hound Dog” by Elvis Presley and the 1969 “Ballad of John and Yoko” by the Beatles use this process, with virtually the same variations in the verses. Also 1959’s “Barbara Ann” by The Beach Boys and 1958’s “The Twist”. However, keep in mind that their rhythm may vary, and some bridges may be slightly different. This is true for any song. You still need to listen to a recording of the song before you get that particular beat just right.

GCGC

The GCGC progression is even easier to learn because it only switches back and forth between two chords. This can be seen on Manfred Man’s 1963 “Do Wah Diddy Diddy” and Tommy Jones & The Shondells’ 1966 “Mony, Mony”. This is a great example of how two very different songs can largely share the same chord structure while still maintaining distinct sounds. Both songs have been popularly covered because they are easy to play and their sound is considered timeless.

GCD

The GCD chord progression offers the most sounds in the group. His advance can be found in such popular hits as 1957’s “Great Balls of Fire” by Jerry Lee Lewis and 1960’s “Twist and Shout” by the Beatles. It’s even common in newer songs like “Give Me One Reason” by Tracy Chapman in 1996, or regional favorites like Ritchie Valens’ “La Bamba.” A great chord progression to start with because of its variety.

These grades are just the beginning of learning popular guitar chord progressions that have been used throughout the last century of popular music. Although these definitely represent the easier development directions to learn, they help provide a starting point for further learning.
