Rockers – The Best Movie For Jamaican Slang and to Speak Jamaican Patois

Wow, it’s been a long time since I last watched Rockers, but I decided to watch it again recently and it’s the BEST movie for learning Jamaican slang and Patois. It stands out from any other Jamaican film before or after it.

Rockers is a 1977 film by Greek director Theodoros Bafaloukos, shot in Jamaica, about a band of Rastas who love reggae, have fun and fight the forces of Babylon, also known as the “Uptown Rankers”. The film follows drummer Leroy “Horsemouth” Wallace as he gets involved in various adventures with his Rasta friends every day. Some of his friends are reggae legends like Jacob Miller, Burning Spear, Gregory Isaacs, Lee Scratch Perry and many more greats. Any movie featuring such legends would not be complete without a few of these artists. Lee Scratch Perry and Jacob Miller both give short but invaluable performances. The soundtrack alone is worth watching the film.

Although the film is entertaining and has great music, there are many other reasons why it is a shining star among Jamaican films. The introduction is classic. The film opens with a scene of Nyabinghi drumming, one of the foundations of Rastafarian culture and reggae. This is where the movie begins, and one thing that Jamaican slang and patois students will love is that the entire movie is in Jamaican patois. Not only do you get the accent, pronunciation, and words, but also the body language and context of certain things. Well, the movie was shot over 25 years ago, so some of the words are dated, but the essence of patois and rasta is still captured well in the film.

It’s the kind of movie you’ll watch every day or two just to learn your Patois voice and some expressions. For example, CHA Mon… you can read this in a book, but you can only capture the context of the use of the term in person or on film.

This is the best movie to watch if you want to have fun, learn Jamaican slang, see dreadlocks and hear classic reggae.
