Selecting Subwoofers for Dubstep and Drum and Bass
As a concert producer, I am often asked which subscribers I would recommend. Subwoofers, like the mains plug, should be selected based on the type of music you want to play and how you will use it. In this article I will limit the discussion to Dubstep and Drum and Bass.
Dubstep and Drum and Bass have a huge amount of content in the 20Hz to 50Hz range, and if you do the math, you’ll need about 5000 watts of that frequency range to create enough sound to be heard together. the other music.
My larger setup is (5) QSC HPR181 for stage front, (6) Martin Blackline dual 18’s for house, and 2 Bag End Dual 18’s running 8000 watts through an ELF processor running in the 8hz-50hz range through a lab group. amp When I play smaller shows I just use my QSC HPR181’s which are 700 watts each but great for ultra bass. The QSCs are self-contained and take 5 minutes to set up, which also helps. Now I’ve heard the common wisdom of not mixing subwoofers, but in reality I’ve yet to find a single audio company that does any of this, except for a tour package that’s made for a specific show, not a type of music (an important distinction). That said, keeping the crossover points and individual woofers in phase with the entire system is very important when mixing bass.
Setting the crossover
Conventional crossovers, such as the very common dBx DriveRack PA, have a good and fairly adjustable crossover that includes the ability to change the roll angle. When matching and tuning the woofer frequencies, I noticed that even though the crossover claims to have cut a frequency, some of the content still goes into the woofer. Obviously, if two brands of subwoofers produce the same sounds, distortion will occur. Therefore, I separate the frequencies by about 5 Hz. Visually on the crossover it looks like I’m losing musical content, but with the gain, I’m not really, and an RTA mic confirms that the setup is correct.
Closed boxes and subharmonics
Bag End really belongs here. There are other subsystems that do subharmonics, but the Bag End was the first, so I’m writing about them. The Infra processor and, before Ron Wickersham’s departure, the Elf processor are the two key components. Dubstep and Drum and Bass require a huge presence in the 20-50Hz range. Most people can’t hear music in this range, but the difference between 20Hz and 40Hz can be heard and felt when the signal is clean and clipping-free. The infrared processor is available in two forms. The first has a flat response up to 18 Hz, the second up to 8 Hz. 18hz is much more efficient in larger systems. If you have an extra 20k to burn, go for the 8hz integrator and (4) dual 18’s. You’ll also need a significant amount of AC to run the amps, usually an additional 20 amp 220 circuit for the Lab Gruppen, or four 20 amp 110 circuits for four QSC amps bridged under each. My Bag Ends typically draw about 3000 watts per dual 18 when generating content STRICTLY limited to the 18-50Hz range. I should note that tweaking the crossover at full volume can quickly destroy any rig, so be careful and know your gear’s frequency response and power handling capabilities.
Subscription prices vary greatly. In the lower price category, I heard Peavey blackwidows, which are technically louder, but much less musical. When mixing two tracks or switching quickly from one to the other, it’s hard to hear much difference between the Peavey subs, they’re just loud, not so musical. JBL and Cerwin Vega subs are fart cans and I think most people know that. They can rumble and shake, but they don’t have an articulate sound – that clarity in the depths that is absolutely necessary for Dubstep and even more so for Drum and Bass.
Some other gear I’ve tried if rich, D&B (not db technologies) audiotech Q2 subs are killer, EAW 218z subs are pretty good, McCauley makes a pretty decent sub with good specs for Dubstep and Bag The ending kills me. However, all these cabinets require extremely expensive reinforcement. 12,000 amps alone can be brought in before you can even turn on a mid-sized system of this caliber.
Another alternative is to build your own box. This isn’t a beginner project, but if you love woodworking and have a spare $2,500, you can build some amazing cabinets. The best way to do this is to visit the forums, look at the plans, and then read through the threads. People often write reviews over the years.
Look for a design that has good frequency response down to 40 Hz and a driver that has exceptional frequency response. OHM (brand) is a pretty incredible driver and there are some high end RCF subs that are bad.
Listen to them before you buy them, if possible use parametric EQ and turn off all frequencies except the 20Hz to 50Hz range – that’s the sweet spot of Dubstep that really sets it apart from others like it from music.
