Songwriters – How to Stop Forgetting Your Lyrics When You’re Performing

Many performing songwriters share the fear of forgetting their lyrics when playing in front of an audience. Even though you probably thought it was an incurable problem, there are things you can do to help keep your lyrics flowing.

“What’s next?”

A lot of times we start thinking “okay, what’s next?” when we are on stage. We don’t usually think like this when we practice at home, but on stage we are so afraid of failure and social rejection that our fear makes us ask ourselves these questions. As if it helps our performance to be perfect.

However, the opposite is happening. Usually when we ask ourselves questions like “what’s next?” it makes us more nervous, 1. Because it reminds us that forgetting the lyrics is a possibility (we didn’t even think about it when we practiced at home), and 2. It’s not what we usually do when we practice. It’s a break from our routine. And the last place we want a break in our routine is when we’re on stage.

Focus on the right emotion

So how can we alleviate this situation? The key is to focus your mind on the emotion of the song and what the main character is experiencing. Your mind can only really focus on one main thing at a time. If your mind is focused on your emotions and what your main character is going through in your lyrics, there’s no room for “what’s next for me?” a question? because you are thinking about other (more important) things. Take part in the story presented. Imagine yourself as an actor.

Not only that, but when you think about your character’s emotions, the text will be there because you’re thinking about a whole story, not just a series of lines. You think of a whole, not just a few small parts. You experience the story as it happens, instead of listing a few lines in your head.

Another great side effect of thinking like this is that your stage presence will improve. Why? Well, one of the most important tasks of a singer is to melt emotions with his lyrics. The text and the delivery of the words must work together.

I’m a big believer in not using lyrics when you’re on stage, for exactly that reason. Think about the last time you saw someone at an open mic sitting in their chair singing a sheet of lyrics that was sitting on a music stand in front of them. If you know what I’m talking about, I can pretty much guarantee you’ve seen a singer whose lyrics are separate from their words. It should be if you don’t even know which words are next until you see them on the page in front of you.

In the spoken word, our voice carries much more meaning than the spoken words. Singing is an exaggerated form of speech, so this concept also applies to singing. Starting to think about how you should feel when you sing and tell your story will improve your vocal performance.

Practice, practice, practice

However, don’t think that using this technique you can go on stage completely unprepared and think that the lyrics will just come to you. Practice is crucial.

Practice at home without your lyrics. Very. Change the way you practice to focus specifically on your lyrics. Try singing your songs a cappella. Then try singing them a cappella at twice their normal speed to see how you can manage this change while practicing at home. It better prepares you for the hectic nature of the stage.

And if you’re the kind of person who currently plays live with a sheet of lyrics in front of you, you can slowly kick the habit. If you usually perform five songs with a lyric sheet, next time you perform, try playing just four songs with the sheet. If you are sure of this, you can only drop the sheet to three songs, then two, etc. Before you know it, you’ll be wondering why you ever needed a lyric sheet during your live performances.

As a last resort, improvise

In those moments when you slip up and forget a line, just keep calm and throw in something else. Most people probably don’t notice anyway. Especially if it’s your own song and they don’t know the lyrics. If you forget a lyric, DO NOT stop playing or laugh and say something like, “I’m so stupid, I forgot my own words.” You don’t want to draw attention to something that everyone else probably didn’t notice.

It’s also important to realize that if you forget a line, it’s not a big deal. You don’t want to get used to it, but every performer experiences some form of forgetfulness from time to time. Just realize that everything is okay. It doesn’t define you, it’s just a silly swipe. Then forget it and move on. I can’t tell you how important it is not to dwell on such little mishaps.

Your turn

Remembering your lyrics is an insurmountable feat. Just be persistent and remember to focus on your protagonist’s emotions. And practice! Nothing worthwhile happens overnight. The most important thing is to have fun with it and try not to take every performance too seriously. Just let it be and move on to the next thing.
