The 5 Key Factors in Worship

What do you think when worship comes up in conversation? All you think about is music? Is this the sermon? Most of the time, the focus of worship is music. Different elements make up the worship service. Music is only part of a bigger picture. We show our worship to God in many ways. In this section, we will examine five elements that give worshipers a more complete worship experience. These things include: singing, prayer, preaching, giving, and fellowship. Let’s start with the singing first.

Singing

Ephesians 5:19

Here is a story about Sam, a new Christian, as he attended a church retreat. The very first activity at this event was the singing of worship songs. Sam was very intimidated by singing out loud. But now she sings more confidently.

He sings louder. This is because of the weekend Retreat. At this retreat, the worship leader encouraged everyone to do more than just hum the lyrics. The worship leader taught everyone at this retreat more than just muttering lyrics. He said, “The Lord has given you a voice to glorify Him. It’s time to offer it to Him. If you sing well, that’s great, but if you don’t, it’s time to get even!”

Emboldened by these words, Sam sang. Terrible! But though he discovered over the years that the only way to improve was through practice. Difficulty was the only place he could try was during the service.

It took a while for Sam to gain confidence by focusing on who he was singing to. He wasn’t worried about how it sounded. This change made worship better.

Eventually, Sam bought a hymnal and began to sing during his devotional time. The lack of music only highlighted her vocal weakness. But again, taking the focus off her vocals and focusing on offering the songs to God improved her experience.

The wonderful thing is that Sam loves to sing more than ever. Realizing that raising your voice to the Lord and hearing that others do the same is the most wonderful experience.

Most would agree that worship involves singing. Singing is a physical action that every believer can do to express what is in his heart. Singing, although similar to speaking, is quite different. Perhaps the most unique thing about singing is the ability for people to say their worship in unison. In group singing we can express praise, gratitude and thanksgiving. We can communicate with God at the same moment. The whole church can make an offering. Singing can also add an emotional element to worship. Music evokes many emotions and moods in addition to melody and tempo. Music is a language of its own.

Praying

Matthew 6:7-15

Let me tell you about a man who took his son to lunch at a local restaurant. They walked over to the counter to sit on the stool. The father lifted his son onto the seat next to the counter. Lunch was ordered, and when the waiter brought the food, the father said, “Son, we’re just going to say a quiet prayer.” Father finished the prayer first and waited for his son to finish the prayer, but he just sat with his head down for a remarkably long time. When the boy finished his prayer, the father had to ask him, “What have you been praying all this time?” The boy looked puzzled and replied, “I don’t really know what I prayed.” “It was a silent prayer.”

Many of our prayers are like this. The words we use are empty. We bring the words to mind, but they repeat insincerity. Here is a revelation for some of you. When you pray, you are simply talking to God. One thing you must realize; God loves you to talk to him. He wants a full relationship. Through prayer you can talk directly with God. Certain elements of prayer can be a form of worship. Prayer is an open door to communication with God.

Prayer can be in silence. It can also be said out loud so that others agree. You can even sing a prayer. When it comes to prayer, I like to use the acrostic ACTS Each letter represents an important part of the prayer. Here are the parts of the prayer:

  • A = Worship
  • C = Confession
  • T = Thanksgiving
  • S = Supplication

A prayer within a prayer

Take some time at the beginning of your prayer to worship God. This is when you tell God how much you value and love Him. It is important to confirm your love for him. How many times have you fallen into prayer by asking for stuff? A great way to start a prayer is to tell God how much you love Him.

Confession in prayer

When you pray, your heart must be in the right place. Let’s face it, humans are sinners by nature. Confession is a kind of acknowledgment of what is true. Most often we confess our sins. God already knows our sins. Yet we must confess them. God is always faithful to forgive our sins that we confess. But I would like to add another point of view to the testimony. This creates a new dimension in your thought process. You can confess the greatness of God. You can profess your faith. Admit the truth!

Thanksgiving in prayer.

God has abundant resources for all Christians. God is working to shower you with blessings. Obedience is thanking Him for all the good things He does in your life. No matter the setting, it’s a good plan to give thanks to God/

Supplication in prayer

As I said before, Christians tend to pile up requests to God. God grant this, God grant this. A plea is your request for something. Prayer needs balance. This is often the plea that Christians spend most of their time on. It’s okay to ask. The Bible says to ask. But you don’t have to stop there. Your prayers must be in accordance with God’s will. If you recall these areas of prayer – adoration, confession and thanksgiving – before you ask for anything, you will get into the right attitude. Your plea to God must be bold. He is the God of unlimited resources. Ask for things that are beyond you.

Preaching

1 Timothy 3:16-17

2 Timothy 4:1-5

We must learn the word of God. Preaching is an essential part of worship. This element of worship allows you to know God. God’s desire is for you to know him. He wants you to understand who and what he is. This is the key to his relationship with you. After all, how can you adore or love someone you don’t know. That’s why you have preachers.

A sermon is really an opportunity to dive into God’s word, the Bible, and learn more about who he is. You will learn how He works. The meat of worship is in the word of God. Remember that music is not just a “warm-up” exercise. Each element is important to the complete worship experience. One complements the other, as do all the other areas discussed in the section.

Give

2 Corinthians 9:6-7

Okay, you have to give with all your heart and soul. The Christian life is not about receiving, but about giving.

Growing up at Christmas, it was a family tradition to give gifts to close family members. I would get presents for my mother, father, brother. It was often difficult to decide which gift to give. First, because I was young, my resources were very limited. So I had to pass on any overpriced gifts. This lowered the playing field a bit. But it became apparent that my parents already had quite a few items that they already owned. I could only get a few things. There are many things like that with God. God owns the universe and everything in it. But one thing we can give is His worship. This is one of the things he really enjoys about his people.

Money is the first thing most people think of when it comes to giving. Giving money to the church is an honor that all of us can do. But I want you to know that it goes beyond that. Your whole life is what God wants. You have the wonderful opportunity to give all your resources to God. This includes your time, your body, your mind and all your possessions.

Giving God all the resources you have is a true sacrifice of praise and worship.

Communion

Matthew 26:26-29 And as they were eating, Jesus took the bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to the disciples, saying: Take, eat! this is my body. And he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying: Drink from it, all of you. For this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the forgiveness of sins. But I say to you: I will not drink from this fruit of the vine until I drink new with you in my Father’s kingdom.

Christians enjoy one of the greatest privileges during the Lord’s Supper. This is the moment for a real intimate relationship with Jesus. This is the time for unity. Now is the time for the worshiper to bond with his Redeemer. It identifies the believer with Christ. Community allows us to focus on the greatest gift ever given to the world. It is a moment to remember that Jesus’ death on the cross is the final and ultimate sacrifice for the sins of the world.

Putting it all together

As you can see, there are different sides to the worship experience. Each is as important as the other. The key to rich and fulfilling worship is balance. As you balance these five components during worship, you offer more options to the worshiper.
