The Body Instrument And The Music Of Life

When I was dating in my twenties, I got pretty deep into some tantric traditions.

You see, I wasn’t happy with my sex life.

Remember, sex wasn’t bad.

If anything, it was pretty good.

But…

It felt like… how can I say…

Normal.

As a man, the MO of my sexual experience was a lot of build-up, a big, short burst… then we gotta take a break, bro.

And it was good again.

But compared to women’s sexual experiences… with their multiple long orgasms… well. I really felt like nothing to write home about.

That way.

I tried to do something about it. I wonder if I can enrich the experience of sexuality.

And, spoiler alert, I sure did.

That’s really cool. But that’s not what my point is about.

It’s about something deeper.

Something that has to do not only with his sexuality, but with his existence as an embodied being.

You see, through exploring what the Tantric traditions have to offer, I have vividly experienced the wisdom of appreciating your embodiment and the power within.

A power we can harness to bring greater meaning, fulfillment and joy to our lives.

Too many of us live too much in our own heads, thinking hard and long.

And to our detriment, we forget that in the background of our minds, our brains and bodies are ultimately working hard to make our experiences, including our thinking, a reality.

However, if instead of forgetting about our body, we learn to embrace it. To nurture our relationship with him…

Well.

Then incredible intelligence and joy can lie at your fingertips… or just a breath away.

The body is the instrument through which we play the music of life.

Our human experience is truly like a magical melody that we constantly experience.

Not only sounds, but also the harmony of colors, aromas, tastes, thoughts and feelings.

And it’s a tune our bodies keep playing.

That’s why we do well to take care of this instrument.

And learn to play with more nuance.

To make the music of our lives even richer. Even more awesome.

One particularly powerful and beautiful sound you can play is the subtle sound of joyful embodied existence.

You can play this by using your breath to fix your consciousness.

Take a deep breath in… and out. Inside and out. Close your eyes if it helps. But the most important thing is to focus your attention on the feeling of your body. About what it feels like to be embodied.

Feel your breath massaging your insides as you inhale and exhale. And while breathing continuously, spread your attention throughout your body.

Feel yourself in your body as you breathe. Feel your chest and abdomen expand and become tender as you inhale. Feel your head clear as your body takes in oxygen. Feel the tips of your fingers and toes become energized as you exhale.

Continue to feel your body as your breath sensitizes it. And notice that you feel energy in yourself because of it. You are lying in wait in your own body.

Note that this is not mere meditation. You don’t just focus on your breath itself.

You use your breath to connect with the consciousness of your whole body.

You see, if you use your breath to spread your attention in your body in this way, you can connect with something really powerful.

You can connect with the subtle joy of embodied existence. It’s a layer of quiet and peaceful yet distinct pleasure in simply being in your body.

And that subtle joy is something you can ALWAYS connect with if you slow down, breathe deeply, and use your breath to focus your attention on your body.

This awareness is a deep source of peace and meaning that you can turn to in life. It’s something that can ground you and strengthen you as you think through and take on the obstacles and challenges that life throws at you.

This may seem counterintuitive. But the idea is that if you focus some of your attention on your body, on the subtle joy of embodied existence, you can actually think better and more clearly. Because less nervous energy controls your thoughts.

Armed with this technique, you can use it to make yourself feel better. Every day.

You can use it to feel good. And be happy with yourself.

All you have to do is focus on your breath. And get in touch with your body.

And that’s what’s always with you. It’s a powerful tool you can always reach for.

That’s all I got for you today. I hope you enjoy playing your body’s instrument and enriching the music of your life!
