The Last Days: Signs of Character

But remember, there will be terrible times in the last days. People are self-loving, money-loving, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, dislike good, treacherous, rash, conceited, rather lovers of pleasure. , like those who love God – there is a form of godliness, but they deny its power. You have nothing to do with them. – 2 Timothy 3:1-5

I came across this scripture today and it caught my attention. It describes the characteristics of certain people in the past days and warns us to beware of it. He warns us not to have anything to do with them. I think this is also a warning to us not to behave like them.

I have always heard that we are living in the last days. In fact, people generations before me said that the last days were closer than we thought and that Jesus was coming back soon. I can believe this because of these qualities that I have seen in myself and in people living in the world today.

There is no way to know exactly when Jesus will return, despite what you hear on television or on the Internet. But according to the scripture mentioned above, we can know the signs by observing ordinary people and their behavior. In just three generations, I have seen these changes emerge in the people I meet.

Let’s look at these characteristics and discuss them so we know what to look for and make sure we’re aware of the signs:

Lovers of themselves
What have you done for me lately? These were the words from a popular song on the radio a few years ago. Unfortunately, this is the mindset of many people in today’s world. What can I get from life? It’s all about me! This is not our attitude, and Jesus did not teach us to think this way.

For a Christian, we can develop this attitude as well. We know we need to help others, but when the people we’re trying to help don’t appreciate or don’t behave the way we think our efforts will, we stop helping. It’s like a slap in the face. We tend to push people away and think only of ourselves. This is how the devil wants us to react. The Bible tells us to turn the other cheek. Don’t stop donating!

Lovers of money
I believe this is the main reason we are in an economic recession today. Money drives this nation and the world. It’s sad to say, but it’s true. We became chained to it because we want more of it. Advertisements on TV and radio arouse the desire for material things. We buy into it and fight to get it. A little is not enough.

One thing I learned during the crisis is how we react when we run out of money. People are depressed! Some even resorted to suicide, murder, theft and other crimes. We must learn to be content with what we have and live with our opportunities. The more you want, the more money you want. Sin develops from this mindset. We just have to be happy where we are, enjoy our lives, and trust God for the things we need.

Braggart/Proud/Arrogant
Pride is one of those harmful traits that kills a person’s character. It is the one that removed Satan from the Garden of Eden. I can’t stand talking to someone who brags about himself. They are quick to tell you how great they are, how many things they have, and how successful they are. Makes me sick! Why do people do this?

As Christians, we must realize that everything we have and everything we are is because God gave it to us. Includes. Our job is to be good stewards of it. We shouldn’t brag about it and tell everyone to “look at me” or “look at what I can do.” Our lives should reflect and point to the one who saved us.

It’s abusive
This trait isn’t just about being abusive to others, even if you hear about it in the news every day. It is also about abusing ourselves and our environment. Many of us don’t even realize we’re doing it.

We live in a world of excessive abundance. Too much of a good thing can be bad for you. This can list a number of things that we use to abuse our bodies. We also do things that damage the world we live in and its precious resources. We need to be aware of how we treat people, ourselves and the world around us.

Disobedient to parents
I see this a lot in families today. I have spoken to many parents whose children do not listen to them or respect them. Our kids are out of control! This could be quickly resolved by following the instructions that God has given us in the Bible. Instead of following the standards of the world, we need God and His Word in our homes, put back into our schools, and be the standard by which everyone in society should live.

Christian parents must continue to raise their children according to biblical principles. Never give up! If we don’t raise and teach them, the world will!

Ungrateful
There are a lot of “ungrateful” people. I’m guilty of it too. We can also see it in our home at Christmas or birthdays. I think the problem is that we have too much “stuff”. If you compare today’s lifestyle with life in the 1930s, you will notice that we live like kings. The problem is that we really don’t need anything, and when we get something, like a gift, it gets added to the stuff we already have. This creates an ungrateful attitude, and we show it by not only being ungrateful, but not caring about our possessions.

The best thing that can happen is to learn to appreciate what we have and thank God and others for it. A drastic lifestyle change would be necessary, where we could not buy anything and “go away”. Believe me, it’s been going broke for a year or so. A simple meal at the local Burger Doodle would be a luxury.

Ungodly
We all know that the world has turned its back on God. You can see it everywhere. People have taken God out of everyday life and replaced it with sinful things. There will be a price for this and we will see it in the actions of society; more crime, violence and other things.

We Christians do not have to become part of the problem. We must live by God’s Word and apply it in our lives more than ever. We are “in” the world, not “of” the world. Being “holy” may not be a popular “word” these days. He simply acts like the Christian we say we are.

Without love
Love is defined by more than saying the three words: I love you. It is a word that calls for action. Don’t just say it – show it! Show it not only to those who are important to you, such as your family and friends, but to everyone.

I think everyone needs to go back to the Bible and relearn what love means. There is a quick fast forward from 1 Corinthians 13:1-8. Let’s read it!

Unforgivable
Can you imagine a world of unforgiveness where everyone holds grudges against each other? To me, that would be a miserable life. Our circle of friends and people we are in contact with would become smaller and smaller. We need to understand that people are not perfect and make mistakes.

If you live according to the teachings of the Bible, Ephesians 4:32 (KJV) tells us, “And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God for Christ’s sake has forgiven you.”

Let’s start forgiving for true life.

Defamatory
To slander is to try to destroy someone’s reputation by speaking ill of them. This reminds me of someone who likes to gossip. Many of us are guilty of this, and some of us do it without even realizing it.

Our tongue and the words we speak are dangerous. They can destroy people. In order not to fall into this category, we must think before we speak. Our words should be used to lift people up instead of putting them down.

Uncontrollable/Brutal/Treacherous/Rash
You see examples of this in the news every day. Crimes and deaths are often caused by an individual’s lack of self-control. People are angry, sad, violent, and tempted by various things that make them react without thinking. The number of criminals in prisons and jails is increasing. Here are some scriptures from the Bible that talk about self-control:

He is [hath] he has no control over his own spirit [is like] the city [that is] sad, [and] without walls. – Proverbs 25:28

A fool speaks his mind, but a wise man [man] he keeps it in afterwards. – Proverbs 29:11

But the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law (Galatians 5:22, 23).

As Christians, we must control our emotions and actions. Let the Lord work in us.

Not lovers of good
The problem in this category is that our society has created new definitions of what is good and what is bad, instead of referring to what the Bible says about it. We have desensitized sin to the point that certain things that were considered sin in the Bible are now acceptable in our lives, culture, and environment. Look around you. How much has changed in the last hundred years? What are we doing now that would have been unheard of years ago? You can make a huge list!

See what we hear on the radio and watch it on TV. See what things we allow in our home. We learned to accept it and move on. We need to get back to the basics of the Bible and get rid of some things. Wouldn’t you think so?

Lovers of pleasure
It is a self-centered lifestyle that focuses on our individual needs and our own happiness. There’s nothing wrong with being happy, but loving is a strong word. Among the priorities of our lives, God should be first on the list. If we focus more on ourselves and the things that make us happy, we miss what Jesus taught us by his example. He had a spirit of service. We should too.

I rejoice and be glad in you, I sing to your name, you Most High. – Psalms 9:2

The world wants to be happy, and it seeks happiness from the pleasures of the world. Unfortunately, they will never find it. Jesus offers it freely. Get it!

A form of godliness
According to a research study I found online, I discovered that there are over 2 billion Christians in the world. How many of this number prayed and asked Jesus to come into their lives and save them? Saying you are a Christian is different than actually being one. To be a Christian, you must be saved. Salvation means that you prayed to Jesus, confessing your sins, asking for forgiveness and accepting Him into your life. There is no other way!

What is the situation in our own neighborhood? How many professing Christians are actually alive?

We cannot judge a person and tell if he is a Christian or not, but we can see it in his actions. James 2:17 says, “Even faith, if it does not have works, is dead because it is alone.” Christians who are truly saved by God’s grace must show this. If people are behaving in an unchristian way, they need to take a closer look at themselves and make things right with the Lord.

If we are living in the last days and these are the signs, we should consider this list and read it carefully. We must apply it in our lives. Jesus is coming back, people! Make sure we are ready!
