The Man Of A Thousand TV and Movie Themes
I don’t know if he actually wrote a thousand themes, but he was certainly able to write enough of them to make a significant impact on the world of music and entertainment. More importantly, Lalo Schifrin has a musical talent that has allowed him to capture and even define the essence of countless TV series and film projects. These include themes and music from notable TV series such as Mission Impossible, The Man from Uncle, Medical Center, THE Cat, The Big Valley, Mannix and Starsky and Hutch. His motion picture themes and scores include several Clint Eastwood films (Coogan’s Bluff, The Beguiled, Dirty Harry, Magnum Force, Sudden Impact, The Dead Pool, Joe Kidd) and hundreds of other films such as The Liquidator, The Cincinnati Kid, Cool Hand Luke . , Enter The Dragon, Bullitt, Kelly’s Heroes, The Fox, Voyage Of The Damned, The Sting II, The Osterman Weekend, The Eagle Has Landed, Sweetwater, Rush Hour movies and The Amityville Horror.
A few years ago, Clint Eastwood said, “Lalo did a great job on Dirty Harry.” Eastwood asked Schifrin to score all of his Dirty Harry sequels (although Lalo wasn’t available when The Enforcer was being produced, so he skipped that one). Clint also involved him in several of his other film projects. Lalo Schifrin spread his influence even further by mentoring young and talented composers such as Ron Jones, who wrote scores for Star Trek: The Next Generation, The A Team and Magnum PI, to name just a few of his scoring achievements. Most people probably did not expect all this from the man born Boris Claudio Schifrin in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1932. This is because his father was a classical music violinist for about thirty years and the conductor of the violin section of one of Argentina’s most respected orchestras, the Teatro Colon.
Lalo Schifrin started his own musical journey at the age of six. He began six years of classical piano studies under Enrique Barenboim, becoming known for his knowledge, musical ability and style. As a teenager, Lalo became a student of Andreas Karalis, who was once head of the prestigious Kiev Conservatory before fleeing Russia. Schifrin was also lucky enough to be accepted as a student by Juan-Carlos Paz, the famous Argentinian composer. For all his classical training, Schifrin broke from his father’s mold in the 1950s and became a talented composer, conductor and arranger of all kinds of music. The Grammy-winning, Emmy-winning and six-time Academy Award-nominated composer turned his attention to contemporary jazz in the 1950s after moving to Paris and receiving a scholarship to the famous Paris Conservatoire. During this time, he also began to perfect his jazz skills in many popular modern music clubs of the City of Lights, and represented Argentina at the 1955 International Jazz Festival in Paris.
After returning to Argentina, he organized and led the first jazz band in South America. He later collaborated with contemporary jazz luminaries such as Cannonball Adderley, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Al Hurt, Sarah Vaughn and Stan Getz. During his time in Argentina, Lalo wrote and performed the score for the film El Jefe. This effort earned him an Argentine Oscar. In 1960, he came to New York to work as an arranger for Xavier Cugat’s famous big band/Latin style orchestra. By 1963, Schifrin had married and moved to Hollywood, where he got his big break after being signed to MGM Pictures. He has worked on many projects including Rhino! and became an extremely popular TV series theme and music composer. His next big break came a few years later when he was asked to write the theme and music for The Planet Of The Apes (written by Rod Serling and starring Charlton Heston).
In the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, Schifrin wrote many of his iconic musical themes and scores. After so much success in TV series and movies, Lalo used his newfound fame to start performing his own music, releasing several popular contemporary jazz style albums on Verve and other labels. In 1997, he founded Aleph Records with his wife Donna, which allowed him to record and release his solo work. These included Jazz Goes To Hollywood, some jazz-rock compositions, and live performances and musical scores of the Mission Impossible and Dirty Harry themes. Never one to limit himself to one particular form of music, Lalo also worked with The Three Tenors (Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti), marking a return to his interest in classical music. In recent years, Schifrin has gained even greater recognition by performing and recording in this genre. However, he continues to perform jazz, his themes and scores, and even occasionally composes film scores, as evidenced by his recent work on the Rush Hour films and Sweetwater (2013). Lalo Schifrin, in his eighties, lives in Beverly Hills with his wife in a mansion once owned by Groucho Marx.
