The Need for Silence in a Noisy World

It’s quite obvious that we live in a terribly noisy world, and it seems to be getting worse by the day. Everywhere we go, we are met with loud, unwanted sounds. When we enter elevators, shopping malls and restaurants, we are engulfed by the musk. I recently had lunch at a popular restaurant and found the background music so loud that it interfered with my normal conversation and enjoyment of my lunch. When I asked the waitress if she could turn the music down, or at least turn it down, she said, “I don’t think we can.” We must still be responsible for volume control.

Add in lawnmowers, snowblowers, leaf blowers, jackhammers, jet engines, delivery trucks, and horns and buzzers of every type and description, and you have constant noise and irritation. Even if you’re watching a television show at a reasonable volume, you’ll jump out of your chair when a commercial comes on at the decibel level of a jet plane.

We seem to have culturally accepted our noisy world, despite the fact that it makes us physically and mentally ill. It seems we can’t live without background music. We have friends who turn on the television when they wake up in the morning and leave it on all day. The house is too quiet when not on. My former high school students told me that the first thing they did when they got home after school was to turn up the CD player as loud as their parents would tolerate.

Cornell University recently conducted a study to determine how noise affects employees in an open office space where people are constantly exposed to faxes, phones, office chats, shredders, etc. levels of adrenaline in their urine. During stress, the body releases adrenaline. It prepares us for fight or flight. When these employees were compared to those working in self-contained office spaces, the results were startling. People working in a quiet, enclosed work area did not have the same high levels of adrenaline in their urine. They were much calmer and less stressed.

Both groups of employees were given a puzzle that required attention and concentration. The open area group was less diligent in solving the puzzle, got frustrated easily and gave up sooner than the group from the quiet office. The study also found that workers in the quiet office slept better at night, had better digestion, were far less irritable at home, and felt better at the end of their workday than employees in the open-concept office. Noise appears to affect focus, productivity, and overall physical and psychological well-being. Noise tends to increase stress levels, which in turn can lead to increased frustration, anger, and strained interpersonal relationships. We must start building friendship with silence.

How to be a friend of silence

Although we have very little control over environmental noise in general, we do have control over our own private environment. This is where we start cultivating friendship with silence.

* Consciously commit to experiencing and appreciating silence.

* Go for a walk in nature. Let the silence soothe your soul.

* If you are alone in your residence, turn off all devices that make noise. Start with fifteen minutes of silence and gradually increase the duration.

* Learn to meditate and schedule a ten-minute meditation period once or twice a day. Gradually increase the meditation time.

* When driving to work, turn off the car radio and drive quietly.

* Go camping for a night by yourself. Find a quiet campsite where people are not allowed to play their music out of concern for others. I usually go camping by myself for a week every year to be alone and quiet in the outdoors. It turned out to be something I’m really looking forward to.

* Drive to a lake at sunset and rent a canoe. Paddle slowly along the shore, taking in the quiet sights and soft sounds of nature as the sun sets and darkness approaches.

* Listen to your breathing in silence. Feel the quiet rhythm of life.

* Before you retire, go outside and look up at the night sky. Soon you will feel another universal rhythm unknown to many. Let the night sky and darkness embrace and soothe you as you prepare for a night’s rest.

* When you read a book, do it quietly. Many of us read to music or while watching television commercials. Try silence. You will love it.

Soon you’ll begin to cherish the periods of quiet you’ve built into your day and crave more. You will quickly find that even in the midst of our noisy world, you are becoming calmer and less tense. Silence will become your invaluable new friend, a friend that can comfort, heal and soothe your soul. What gift will you give yourself?

Be still and learn the restorative power of silence.
