The Psychology of Genius

On the power of genius and the need to develop practical psychological models and solutions for educating geniuses.

I’ve written a lot about creative genius. However, the psychological profile of genius deserves a separate discussion, because it is very interesting, and the traits or characteristics of geniuses are so unique that they require proper identification and delineation. Genius is characterized by a high level of intelligence, an intelligence quotient IQ score above 145, an exceptionally high level of independence and a high level of creativity. Most profound geniuses are very independent in their thinking, highly creative, and have very high intelligence. Genius is usually defined by these primary qualities of intelligence, creativity, and independence. However, there are certain characteristics that distinguish genius from other people.

Genius and personality: Geniuses have unique personalities and characteristics. They are the rule breakers, the system destroyers, the world changers, the visionaries and the pioneers. In societies where geniuses are recognized and valued, they have better opportunities to utilize their talents. But geniuses in less developed societies or, say, conflict zones, may not have the right opportunities and tend to withdraw, and some may become depressed, schizophrenic, or suffer from other types of mental illness. Without the right opportunities and channels, some may become antisocial and criminal. A genius personality is unique and usually either very withdrawn and quiet or very outgoing and socially savvy. Some geniuses can fluctuate between being very withdrawn and very social. Some writers, artists, innovators, creative geniuses may be prolific in their abilities and creative output, but may be very quiet or taciturn in social situations, and some may avoid all forms of social interaction. Geniuses tend to have very prominent leadership skills, say things that you will remember forever, and generally have a powerful and impactful personality that cannot be missed or ignored. Even the quiet ones will have an impact on their social relationships. Most geniuses, even the very quiet types, are remarkably strong-willed, determined, and a little obsessive.

Genius and power: Geniuses are very powerful and impressive because they are confident in their abilities. They are confident in their qualities, they know that they can influence and have a definite effect on people. They attract people with their brilliance, and everyone is attracted to a genius. They are like social magnets. Geniuses are also highly intuitive and perceptive, understanding people, predicting responses and reactions, and being able to see through people’s motives. This keen psychological understanding of people is what makes genius so powerful. Even the most socially withdrawn geniuses are super mediums and understand people very well. They simply know and understand the seemingly inexplicable, and because they can predict the answers, they know how to handle people and situations. If a person of average intelligence comes up with five possible scenarios and options, geniuses come up with 50 different options. This ability to see all angles of a situation makes them powerful because they can anticipate and handle situations better. Geniuses can easily gauge people’s strengths and weaknesses, making it easier to spot talent and understand who they can rely on to do certain tasks. Geniuses are also more knowledgeable, and as several philosophers have said, and Bertrand Russell has re-emphasized, “knowledge is power.”

Genius and sexuality: All geniuses are oversexed. Period. Genius is driven by sexual urges and libido or vitality. Sexual desire gives them their ambition and prompts them to do what they want, and many geniuses achieve extraordinary feats because of their vitality or due control of their sexual desire. Some, like Newton, are frightened by sexual desire and try to suppress it, and others, like Picasso, openly boast about it, but all geniuses are constantly haunted and tormented by their sexual desires. Geniuses have an equally strong self-control alongside their explosive sexuality, so self-control helps them channel their desires into more constructive and creative pursuits. Some choose to deny or reject their sexuality as a kind of personal challenge and remain celibate for long periods of time. Research studies have shown that most highly intelligent people stick with few sexual partners throughout their lives. Some geniuses may consider themselves spiritually, intellectually, or morally superior in their sexual relations with lesser mortals, so the practice of celibacy involves a certain level of pride and high self-esteem. Geniuses are also mentally more androgynous, do not have typical male or female features, and are not associated with typical gender issues, so sexual confusion also exists. Some, like van Gogh, may be involved in several unsuccessful heterosexual or homosexual relationships. Many geniuses become gay, asexual, or enter into forms of alternative sexuality. Oscar Wilde, Leonardo da Vinci are geniuses who probably felt more comfortable with the homosexual side of their androgynous persona. Many are bisexual, although some geniuses come to terms with their androgyny and practice socially acceptable forms of sexuality such as heterosexual behavior, marrying, raising families, and so on. However, deviant sexual behaviors such as celibacy, bisexuality, homosexuality, alternative sexuality are very common among geniuses.

Genius and creativity: Genius is characterized by insatiable curiosity about everything, followed by the need to acquire knowledge in many different fields. They can be highly technical, focusing on one subject such as computer science, although many geniuses are interested in several subjects and are versatile, multi-tasking and gifted or gifted in many areas. They have this magical or supernatural ability to do many things very well. Some people focus on one area and become extremely successful in that area. A high level of creativity manifested in genius is usually a product of knowledge, imagination, independence and intelligence. Because geniuses are motivated by curiosity and have vast knowledge, they use that knowledge along with imagination to come up with unique and great ideas. One component of this is independence of thought. Geniuses are highly independent in their thinking, like to think outside the box, too proud to rely on other people’s ideas, so independent thinking gives them the boost they need to boost their egos. They are thought leaders, and independent thinking is essential to satisfy their creative, sexual, or life paths. Their independence of thought gives them unparalleled creative abilities, so most geniuses excel in technological innovation, in creative fields such as writing, theater or architecture, or inventing new types of music composition or dance methods. Geniuses tend to find an outlet for their creativity and tend to be very fertile and prolific.

Genius and madness: Geniuses are usually a bit eccentric. They actually enjoy eccentricity because the craziness helps them release high levels of creative tension. In addition, geniuses are able to predict responses and foresee events, so they are able to quickly analyze many factors and act in ways that seem a little “crazy” to most people. So there is usually an underlying method to the madness, along with the apparent madness. But they have great insight, so they know that they are acting mad, and they have considerable courage to stretch their imaginations and actually engage in some temporary insanity, knowing very well that they are in complete control of their minds. They are not afraid of madness. People of average intelligence are controlled by their thoughts, so they can actually become insane. Geniuses and people with very high intelligence actively control their minds, so even if they seem crazy on the surface, they have a pretty good grasp of their thoughts, so don’t go crazy. Still, some geniuses struggled with deep depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and more. Mental illnesses can occur among socially maladjusted geniuses. When geniuses don’t find an outlet for their creativity, or their creative talents are stifled in some way, they can lose their minds, become antisocial, or completely insane due to their personal circumstances. It is essential to provide appropriate opportunities for children and adults who show very high intelligence. Highly intelligent children should be given additional creative tasks and encouraged to think for themselves, so that they do not become too frustrated when their abilities are not appreciated.

Psychologists are familiar with genius, and there are many theoretical models in psychology to explain the phenomenon of genius. Yet there are very few practical models and solutions for actually supporting, encouraging, guiding or nurturing geniuses. Too many highly intelligent children are driven insane by their teenage years, and as the intelligence levels of children worldwide increase, we need more practical or applied psychological solutions and models to understand and nurture geniuses of all ages and cultures.
