Try Writing A Humorous Or Novelty Song

If you’re a songwriter, sometimes you can feel like you’re stuck in a rut, like you always come up with the same basic ideas and situations you want to write about. One way to break out of this endless cycle is to intentionally write a song about something lighthearted, funny, or just plain weird.

Let’s face the facts. Most pop and rock type songs are about one and only one theme: good old fashioned LOVE. That’s right, in music it’s always boy meets girl, boy loves girl, boy loses girl, singing about it all the time. There are songs about loneliness and songs about being trapped. There are songs about good relationships and even more songs about others. And of course there is the physical side of things.

In the old days (50’s and early 60’s) most songs were about love, but there were always two or three “new songs” on the charts and on the radio. The very first song I remember learning to sing along to was “Witch Doctor” by David Seville, with its catchy chorus: “Oo ee oo ah ah, ting tang, walla walla bing bang.” Good stuff. There was also “The Purple People Eater” by Barry Cryer about a creepy alien who… well, you remember. And who can forget squirrels? (Especially since they seem to still be here.)

Some of the songs were basically about love, but with a novel approach to the subject. Does anyone remember Dodie Stevens singing Pink Shoe Laces by Mickie Grant?

She wears brown shoes with pink laces

Polka dot vest and man oh man

Brown shoes with pink laces

And a large Panama with a purple hat band

It’s a little hard to imagine the guy she’s singing about, but you have to admit, they’re fresh lyrics!

They laugh at me

There don’t seem to be that many humorous or novelty songs anymore, unless I’m looking for laughs in the wrong places. As a songwriter, you can consider it a challenging exercise to write at least one song that has a noticeably light touch. But where do you get the idea for such a song? Don’t make me laugh! Ideas are everywhere. The next time your friend gets upset, make a mental note of what you were joking about and what he said. Chances are you could build a song around it! (I’m serious. It works.)

If someone (perhaps you) tells a funny story that has everyone in stitches, what do you think? This is another possible theme for a song. You’ve probably heard the song from Arlo Guthrie’s perfect story, “Alice’s Restaurant.” Your story doesn’t have to be as immersive as a good song. And feel free to falsify the facts! This is a song, not a testimony. Use your imagination. It decorates.

People on TV are always saying things that could be song titles or lines if you just listen to them. I wrote a lot of songs based on what was said on TV. One is “Shut Up and Dance” someone said in an otherwise lame scene I saw the other night. You can listen to the song here.

As soon as I heard that phrase, I thought it would be a good call-and-response chorus, going back and forth between “shut up and dance” and something else. After I started writing the poems, I immediately wrote the whole thing, which is rare for me. I usually have trouble with the third stanza, especially when it has a tight pattern of rhyme and rhythm. I really got into the frustrated guy who just wants to dance. I could have written more poems if I had needed them!

Something interesting about this song is that the chord pattern of the bridge is the same as the chorus. I can’t remember if I did this on purpose (probably not), but I can’t remember another song where this is true.

Anyway, the point is, if I can do it, so can you. Unless you’re in a Norwegian death metal band or something, your music will definitely benefit from a touch of humor, a touch of wit. Go!
