Tug of War – Carly Rae Jepsen: The Pop Star Has More to Her Than Asking Boys to Call

Everyone has heard Jepsen’s infectious No. 1 hit, Call Me Maybe. I bought it, listened to it on repeat and got tired of the single like many people. Then I got Kiss’ album as a gift and I found it to be a crazy catchy album, it was good to work out. To be honest, I was a little sad because I thought there was more to his music. As always, I fell in love with him and found out he had released another album, his debut album.

Fresh from Canadian Idol, Jepsen released his debut album, full of self-penned songs. With this record, Jepsen influenced many different genres of music, making this album a collage of different types of music. It draws from typical pop rock and adds some folky vibes and even country vibes at times. It’s what makes his voice unique, something he lost after he decided to go mainstream with “Call Me Maybe.” This album sounds like her personality and sounds different.

The first song on the album is “Bucket”. In this song, Jepsen performs a children’s song and combines acoustic pop, reggae and some Hawaiian music. He uses the metaphor of building a sandcastle to talk about his problems with his friend and his life in general. This is the first look listeners will really get to know Jepsen’s songwriting skills. He is able to take a child’s hobby and turn it into a song suitable for a young couple. Another song on the album that really showcases Jepsen as a songwriter is “Money and the Ego.” Along with “Bucket” and “Tug of War”, Jepsen was nominated for Songwriter of the Year at the Juno Awards for this track. Jepsen debates the meaning of life, but makes the difficult topic more radio-friendly with his light acoustic production.

Two interesting production tracks are the title track and “Heavy Lifting”. The title track has many different parts of the song played over each other until the end, all played at the same time, making the track really challenging the ears and trying to hear each part. It will be an experience for your ears. “Lifting” is my favorite track on the record. It describes the story of first love and the first time. The songwriting is innocent and naive, so it’s a really joyful love song that’s missing from the radio these days. The song has a strong country pop influence with the acoustic based production big bridge and chorus that fills out the track and makes for a pleasant listen.

One of the lowest on this album is “Sunshine on My Shoulders”. This is a cover of John Denver’s classic song. A song like this is difficult to cover well because of the beauty of the original track. Jepsen tries to make it more poppy, but it doesn’t really work in his favor. It was her debut single at radio and doesn’t reflect her as an artist like the rest of her album.

Closing the review on a positive note, here is a song that Jepsen should have built his entire career and sound on. “Tell Me” is a short, acoustic, folk-influenced ballad that clocks in at just 2:21. She tells the story of a breakup and the need for her lover to tell her straight and not try to dance around her feelings because she can’t understand him. Jepsen’s vocals shine, their small imperfections turned into positives in this revealing number.

It’s easy to see why Jepsen didn’t continue making records of this type. This album did not sell well, selling only 10,000 copies today and was released in 2008. But this is the kind of music that makes Carly Rae Jepsen Carly Rae Jepsen, and not just a Katy Perry/Britney Spears clone. I hope that with his new album, Jepsen decides to go back to his roots a bit and create another album as incredible as this one.

Best numbers: Money and Ego, Tug of War, Heavy Lifting, Tell Me

Pitches: Sunshine on my shoulder

Overall rating: 4 and a half crowns
