The staff is Mexican though, so it gets a little lost in translation. The environment is typical “fast food” sharp, although the location is conveniently located in the thick of the shopping world of the Republic of Uruguay.

An authentic Japanese sushi bar where slices of raw or marinated seafood, rice and vegetables are transformed into aromatic, colorful delicacies before your dazzling eyes. If you are really ready for the real thing and a unique experience at an affordable price, I recommend this place.

If you haven’t tried vegetarian food yet, why not give it a try here, where the selection is plentiful and tasty with starters such as Aguacate and Tomate Relleno, Papa al Horno con Cebollitas Aztecas and Croquettas de Elote con Puree de Papaya. As an old-fashioned “meat and potatoes” person, I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised by the delicious appetizers on the menu here. Open from Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 8 pm, Sunday from 9 am to 7 pm. Soft pop music plays in the background during meals thanks to a live keyboard artist most days in the morning and evening. A really nice touch.

The waitress put a bowl on the table in front of me. A generous slice of grilled beef lay next to the gravy-colored refried beans. A generous green salad of tomatoes, lettuce, grated carrot and cucumber filled one side of the plate, but the beef topping was the center of attraction. Slender, deep green strips with a slightly spicy aroma mixed with small, bright red whole chilies. A short stack of corn tortillas was steaming in the saucer next to the bowl. So it was “Beefsteak con Nopales”. Maguey is a type of succulent plant. If its botany is rusty, it means it is a type of cactus. Nopales take center stage here, and as you might expect, they feature in many dishes such as Nopales Au Grautin and Costilla con Nopales. The young, tender calyx of the prickly pear is harvested, cleaned and shaved of its spines and thorns before being grilled or baked. Good value appetizers are priced between 21.50 and 42.50 pesos. Many restaurants and “Taquerias” prepare them as a dish because of their distinctive taste. It can also be juiced and mixed with other fruit and vegetable juices for a tasty, healthy drink. Down to the bottom!

If it’s sweet Bunky, you probably have it. (Well, not me, but the candied fruits and vegetables do.) And if they don’t have it, you can order it and they will get it or make it for you. Boasting that they have been in business for 125 years, baskets, special sweets and sugared everything can be found in this small shop with glass walls. The windows alone are enough to pique your interest. Try the candied yucca or pumpkin – fantastic! Products are sold by weight, so you can order as few or as many toys as you want. A definite “Must – Stop” on the “Offbeat Mexico City” tour. Your sweet tooth will thank you, thank you, and thank you. Enjoy!

The yelling and screaming started as soon as I entered the entrance, “Here, Lord! We have the best,” “what do you want? We have it!” “Do you like the best home cooking? Try ours, it’s ready now. You won’t regret it!” “My mother cooks our ham herself.” It’s so soft it will make you cry. A dozen cooks and garroteros attacked me at once. Each tried to get me to eat at their establishment. Everything looked good. Everything smelled good. They were persistent. They begged. They begged. They begged. When all that didn’t work, if there was time, they joked. “You leave the best food in the market!” “You should have eaten here, now you’re going to get heartburn!” Welcome to the Mercado de Alimentos San Camilito, located on one side of the bustling Plaza Garibaldi. I settled at Norberto Uscanga Ortiz’s seafood stand and enjoyed Arroz con Pulpo (seasoned rice mixed with generous pieces of octopus – 20 pesos), Mojarra frito (fried Mojarra – fish) with mixed tomatoes, lettuce and avocado salad, small bread freshly baked bread (38 pesos for the bowl) and I washed it all down with a couple of almost frozen Coronas (10 pesos).

I walked an hour and a half from there, 11 Mariachis and three good stories from Norberto later, a stuffed and happy man. When you go, give him my regards. You can feast on the best seafood dishes in town.
